Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (14-9) squandered a three-run lead in the seventh, and saw their season-high five-game winning streak come to an end in a 7-3 loss to the Birmingham Barons (10-14) on Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium.

Rays number three prospect Brendan McKay was making his fourth start of the season, and the lefty looked sharp again, going five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk to go along with six strikeouts in a no-decision.

The Biscuits provided the southpaw with some run support in the third, when a double steal of second and home by Lucius Fox and Brett Sullivan put Montgomery up 1-0. Jesus Sanchez would crush his third homer of the season over the right field wall in the fourth to make it 2-0, and a throwing error by Barons left fielder Luis Gonzalez made it 3-0 at the end of six.

Montgomery appeared to be cruising until Blake Bivens walked the bases loaded to start the seventh. Ivan Pealez (0-1) then came on to replace the righty, and Ti'Quan Forbes lined a single off the lefty's hand to put the Barons on the board. After Pelaez left with an injury, Phoenix Sanders entered and walked Laz Rivera and Luis Alexander Basabe to tie the game at three. A Gonzalez sac fly gave the Barons the lead for good and a Yermin Mercedes RBI-single added to it in the five-run seventh in which Birmingham brought 11 batters to the plate.

The Barons would add two more runs in the eighth on a two-run single by Forbes, and Brett Sullivan became the first non-pitcher position player to pitch for the Biscuits working a 1-2-3 ninth in the defeat.

The Biscuits will try to bounce back in Monday's series finale when Arturo Reyes (3-1) takes on Tanner Banks (0-2) at 10:35 AM CT.

The 10-game home stand will continue on Wednesday, May 1when the Mobile BayBears come to town on what will be Craft Beer Night at Riverwalk Stadium; Military Appreciation Night and MAX Fireworks on Friday, May 3; Star Wars Night featuring a Jersey Auction and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, May 4; and Cinco de Mayo Celebration on Sunday, May 5.
