Jackson Generals News Release

Jackson, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, didn't have the firepower to match Pensacola on Sunday, dropping their matinee meeting 8-3 at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Blue Wahoos (17-7) claimed the series with the victory, holding Jackson (12-10) to three runs for the second night in a row.

Southpaw Devin Smeltzer (3-1, 0.60 ERA) allowed only 4 Jackson hits in five innings of work, pinning down the Generals' offense with 56 of his 77 pitches going for strikes. Smeltzer struck out three and walked none, preventing the home team from moving past first base until a two-out Ben DeLuzio triple in the fifth inning.

Daulton Varsho hit a two-run homer in the sixth against Adam Bray to keep the Generals from being shut out, closing the gap to a 5-2 deficit at that moment. The West Tennesseans didn't score again until a solo homer by Dominic Miroglio in the ninth against Cody Stashak, the first Double-A longball for Miroglio. Miroglio and DeLuzio both finished with multiple hits, as did Jamie Westbrook, but the rest of the Jackson order beyond those three and Varsho all fell silent.

Sam Lewis (1-2, 2.35 ERA) pitched extremely well through four innings, recording half of his first twelve outs by punchout. Lewis got into hot water in the fifth inning, conceding a walk, a single, and a walk with one out that loaded the bases. An infield ground ball by Pensacola's Luis Arraez got the better of shortstop Andy Young, who couldn't field it cleanly and allowed a run to score. Lewis was then pulled, ultimately taking credit for two hits, two runs, four walks, and seven strikeouts.

Ryan Atkinson, who replaced Lewis after the error, struggled over 1.1 innings, conceding two infield hits and then a two-run double by Caleb Hamilton in the sixth that pushed Pensacola's lead out to 4-0. A bloop RBI single by Jordan Gore put another run on the board, putting Atkinson's total bill at three earned runs on four hits. Daniel Gibson supplied one and one-third frames without allowing a run, but Damien Magnifico gave up three runs on two hits in the eighth while battling to find the plate. Bud Jeter threw a scoreless ninth.
