Birmingham Barons News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Seven unanswered runs from the Birmingham Barons (10-14) secured a 7-3 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (14-9) Sunday afternoon from Riverwalk Stadium.
The win snapped the Barons six-game losing streak and snapped the Biscuits five-game winning streak.
Stumbling throughout, Birmingham found their stride in the top of the seventh by scoring five runs and batting around. They walked the bases loaded off Biscuits pitcher Ivan Pelaez before Ti'Quan Forbes lined a hit back off Palacios to score Micker Adolfo to make it a 3-1 Biscuits lead.
Pelaez departed with an injury from the line drive off arm and the Barons kept feasting. Back-to-back walks from Laz Rivera and the newly joined Luis Basabe tied it at three.
A sac fly from Luis Gonzalez scored Forbes from third and gave the Barons their first lead of the game, one they would not relinquish, to make it 4-3.
The Barons seventh inning was a huge sigh of relief. It was the first lead of the series for Birmingham and matched their run total of the previous three series games.
Forbes came up clutch again one inning later, with a two-RBI single to score Blake Rutherford and Trey Michalczewski for a 7-3 Barons lead.
Barons catcher Yermin Mercedes continued his torrid start to the season. He finished the day with three hits, raising his average to .438, which included an RBI single in the seventh to score the Barons fifth run and take a 5-3 lead.
For Mercedes, his single in the fourth inning extended his current hitting streak to 13 consecutive games. He has played in 14 games this season and while he did not get a hit in his first game, he has reached base safely in all 14.
Barons starter Felix Paulino earned his team-leading third win of the season in six innings of work. The left-hander Hunter Schryver pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Paulino before Luis Martinez finished off the ninth.
The Biscuits opened the scoring with some heads up baserunning. Mercedes' throw to second trying to get Lucius Fox stealing second was high and wide to receiver Rivera. The throw allowed the chance for Brett Sullivan to steal home from third base and make it 1-0.
Jesus Sanchez, the Tampa Bay Rays No. 4 prospects, drove his second homer of series in the fourth with no one on to make it 2-0. He padded to his league-best 18 RBI. The final Biscuits run came off a throwing error from Gonzalez on his throw to the infield, allowing Tristan Gray to advance home off the single to left from Miles Mastrobuoni.
The Rays No. 3 prospect, the duel threat pitcher and DH Brendan McKay, got the start on the mound. He earned a no decision but was impressive in shutting the Barons down for five innings, giving up just three hits and striking out six.
Once he left, the Biscuits threw out four relief pitchers and a position player to finish the final four innings.
Basabe, the White Sox No. 7 prospect, made his season debut with the Barons Sunday after some rehab stints with Kannapolis.
The Barons coming into the day had struggled to plate runs. The seven runs on Sunday surpassed their previous six game total of six runs over the course of the losing streak.
The Barons will wrap up their series with Montgomery at 10:35 p.m. on Monday from Riverwalk Stadium. Left-hander Tanner Banks (0-2, 4.42 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Barons and make his third start of the season.
WJQX-FM 100.5 will be the home of the Barons on Monday. Fans can tune into the Coca-Cola Pregame Show starting at 10:20 a.m.
The Birmingham Barons are the proud Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The Barons will open the home portion of their 2019 season, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of Michael Jordan's lone year in baseball, against the Tennessee Smokies at 7:05 p.m. April 10 at Regions Field.
