Birmingham Barons News Release

Birmingham, AL - A night after struggling to generate any offense at the plate, the Birmingham Barons returned to their potent ways in defeating the Montgomery Biscuits 9-3 in front of 3,337 fans at Regions Park.

Barons' starter Andre Rienzo faced just two batters and was forced to leave the game after pulling up lame while attempting to field a Ty Morrison bunt between first base and the pitchers mound. Rienzo was attended to by Barons' trainers and staff and was removed from the ballgame with a lower body injury. Nick McCully relieved and retired the first two batters he faced. However, he was unable to escape the inning unscathed as Tyler Bortnick ripped a two-run triple into the right field alley giving the Biscuits a 2-0 lead.

The Barons would strike back quickly in the bottom half of the inning, batting around and scoring six runs in the frame. After the first three batters reached base, Eric Morrison tied the game with a two-run single to left scoring Tyler Saladino and Jared Mitchell. Luis Sierra would give the Barons a 4-2 lead with a two-run single and Kenny Williams Jr. extended the lead to 6-2 with a two-run double.

The lead would grow to 8-3 in the fifth on a two-run double by Andy Wilkins. Wilkins would finish 3-for-5 on the night. The final run scored via a balk by Biscuits reliever Scott Shuman.

The win was picked up by McCulley (1-0, 6.08) who allowed a run (0 earned) on two hits in 4.0 innings while striking out three in emergency relief or Rienzo. The loss went to Jacob Thompson (7-7, 5.02) who allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 3.0 innings. With the win, the Barons improved to 44-53 and 14-14 in the second half while the Biscuits fell to 52-44 and 16-12 in the second half.

The Barons will look to make it two-straight over the Biscuits tomorrow night as LHP Spencer Arroyo (4-0, 2.42) puts his perfect record on the line against RHP Matt Buschmann (3-5, 4.17). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CDT.
