Barons Big 1st-Inning Bullies Biscuits

HOOVER, Ala.- The Birmingham Barons (44-53/14-14) rode a six-run first inning to a 9-3 victory over the Biscuits (52-44/16-12) on Friday night at Regions Park.

The first three Barons reached to load the bases off Jake Thompson (7-6) in the first inning. After Andy Wilkins flew out to left field, Erik Morrison started a stretch of five-consecutive hits for the Barons. Morrison and Luis Sierra swatted two-run singles while Kenny Williams hit a two-run double to cap the scoring and give Birmingham a 6-2 lead. Birmingham put the game out of reach with a Wilkins two-run double in the fifth inning to give the Barons an 8-3 advantage.

For the second consecutive night, the Biscuits scored multiple runs in the first inning. With runners on first and second, Tyler Bortnick ripped a two-run triple into right-centerfield to push the Biscuits out in front 2-0 after the first half-inning.

Hak-Ju Lee collected three hits for the second consecutive night, extending his on-base streak to 33 games.

Jake Thompson picked up the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in three innings.

The Biscuits and Barons will be in action again Saturday night at 6:30. RHP Matt Buschmann will take the mound for Montgomery while Birmingham will send out LHP Spencer Arroyo.
