Mississippi Braves News Release
Pearl, MS - On Tuesday, former Atlanta Braves RHP Peter Moylan will join the Double-A Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park. The M-Braves will return home to play a five-game series against the Southern League's South Division First Half Champions, the Mobile BayBears.
Moylan was originally signed by the Minnesota Twins as an amateur free agent in 1996. After spending two years with the Twins organization, he was released and returned home to Perth, Western Australia.
While in Australia, Moylan mounted a come-back and became a surprise pick for the World Baseball Classic (WBC) following his stint in the February Claxton Shield tournament. During the WBC he made headlines striking out notable players such as Bobby Abreu and Marco Scutaro in his only outing. Following the WBC, Moylan signed a Minor League contract with the Braves on March 10, 2006, after an invitation to Atlanta's spring training.
Moylan was assigned to Triple-A Richmond, now the Gwinnett Braves, and bounced back and forth between Richmond and the Atlanta Braves. In his first year with the organization, he made 35 appearances with Richmond posting a 6.35 ERA and a 1-7 record. His first Major League appearance was on April 12 against the Philadelphia Phillies. The right hander pitched one inning, fanned one batter and gave up one hit. He went on to make 15 big league appearances throughout the year posting a 4.80 ERA with 14 strikeouts.
Moylan started his second season with Richmond but received an early April call up to Atlanta. During 2007, he led all MLB rookies with a 1.80 ERA in 90 innings and kept opponents to a .208 average.
In 2008, he underwent Tommy John surgery due to a bone spur, but made a full recovery and returned to the mound in 2009. During the '09 season, he successfully pitched in 87 games while not allowing a single homerun, becoming the first Brave with two 80-appearance seasons. Then in 2010, he made 85 mound appearances (tied for second in the Majors) and finished the season with a 6-2 record and 2.97 ERA.
Since his Braves debut, Moylan has made 287 appearances in the Majors and only 49 in the Minors. Currently, the Australian native's Major League record stands at 19-9 with a 2.60 ERA. He has struck out 205 batters (328 total) over the course of his 255.2 innings pitched with Atlanta.
Today, the M-Braves will continue a four-game road series against the Jacksonville Suns. LHP Brent Leach (0-2, 1.59) will face Jacksonville's RHP Bryan Evans (3-6, 3.97) at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville for game two of the series. The Trustmark Park Box Office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. To purchase tickets, stop by the Ticket Office, call 888-BRAVES4 or go online at mississippibraves.com.
