Lancaster Stormers News Release
Former Major League left-hander Horacio Ramirez has been signed to a contract by the Lancaster Barnstormers, it was announced today by manager Butch Hobson.
Ramirez, 32, had been pitching in Korea but recently became available.
The Southern California native signed with the Atlanta Braves in 1997 and reached the big leagues in 2003, making an immediate splash. He won seven consecutive decisions from April 16 to July 7 in his rookie season and went on to finish with a 12-4 mark and 4.00 ERA. The southpaw won 11 more games for the NL East Champion Braves in 2005 and went 5-5 for Atlanta in 2006.
Since leaving the Braves, Ramirez has appeared in a Major League uniform for Seattle, Kansas City, the White Sox and, most recently, in 12 games for the Los Angeles Angels last year. He has made 105 big league starts and 64 relief appearances, compiling a career 40-35 record and 4.65 ERA.
Hobson had agreed to terms with Ramirez prior to the 2011 season, but the left-hander received a call from the Angels shortly thereafter and never appeared in a Lancaster uniform. Along with his 12 appearances at the big league level, the southpaw was 3-2 with a 3.96 ERA in 45 games for Class AAA Salt Lake.
"Obviously, (Ramirez) has had a lot of success in his career," said Hobson. "He's versatile. He would like to start and, after two or three outings, we will be able to make that determination."
To make room on the roster, the Barnstormers have placed left-handed pitcher Ross Peeples on the inactive list.
The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their eighth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
