Lancaster Stormers News Release
Dwayne Pollok had done a fine job out of the Lancaster bullpen, but since replacing Rich Rundles in the rotation, the right-hander from San Antonio has been nothing short of spectacular.
On Thursday evening, Pollok fired six scoreless innings, leading the Barnstormers to a 3-1 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish in the opener of a four-game series at Harbor Yard.
Lancaster maintained a 5 1/2 game lead in the Freedom Division with the win.
Pollok (3-0) allowed six hits without walking a batter. He fanned two.
Bridgeport had him in serious trouble twice. In the bottom of the second, Luis Lopez singled to right center, and Luis Rodriguez followed with a bunt single. Elliott Ayala tried to bunt the runners along but pushed the ball back to the mound, and Pollok was able to get a force at third. James Simmons grounded into a 6-3 double play as the right-hander kept the game scoreless.
Then, in the bottom of the fourth, Lopez singled to center and Rodriguez doubled off Fehlandt Lentini's glove down the right field line. Ayala failed to produce a run with a high chopper back to the mound, and Pollok got Simmons on a routine fly to right ending that threat.
Lancaster finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the fifth. Adam Godwin singled with one out and stole second. Lentini followed with a single through the left side. Godwin stopped at third, but Lentini caught sight of the throw heading to the middle of the infield and bolted for second, beating the return throw. Terry Tiffee chopped a ball to first baseman Brock Peterson, and Godwin, who was caught in a rundown on a similar play in the first inning, held his ground until Peterson raced to first. He then broke for the plate, beating the throw as Lancaster took the 1-0 lead.
The Barnstormers scored a more conventional run in the seventh as Ryan Harvey singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Brad Boyer's two-out single up the middle.
Bridgeport fought back against reliever Horacio Ramirez, making his Barnstormers debut, in the seventh. Ayala beat out a one-out infield single on the right side and moved to second on Simmons' single rapped through the left side. Pedro Lopez picked up a walk to load the bases with one out, but the Bluefish could only manage one run as Kennard Jones bounced into a 6-4 force play. Ching-Lung Lo came on and retired Eddie Rogers on a high hopper to third.
Tommy Everidge blasted his fifth homer of the season leading off the eighth inning. Jeff Bennett survived a leadoff double in the eighth, and Tim Hamulack tossed a perfect ninth to record his 10th save.
The Bluefish entertain the Barnstormers again on Friday evening with Dan Serafini making his first Atlantic League start in 2012 for Bridgeport against Alan Johnson (3-3). Game time is 7:05. The contest will be aired on 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com and the I Heart Radio cellphone app.
