Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
CAMDEN, New Jersey - A five-run eighth inning for the Camden Riversharks (24-23) shelved the Sugar Land Skeeters (18-28) in their first trip to Campbell's Field in franchise history on Thursday night.
The Skeeters started the scoring in the top of the first with hot-hitting Dominic Ramos. The starting second baseman tripled the opposite way down the right-field line with the leadoff at-bat. Bubba Bell singled up the middle driving in his 17th RBI of the season to give the Skeeters a 1-0 lead. Sugar Land tacked on one more when Bell attempted and successfully stole third. He then scampered home on the throw when Sharks catcher Alvin Colina misfired the ball into left to give the Skeeters a 2-0 lead.
Sharks starting pitcher Keith Weiser (3-2) and Skeeters starter Derrick Gordon (1-3) both went five innings to get the up-and-down decision, but the former only allowed five runs while the latter gave up seven. The Skeeters only managed two hits off four Sharks relievers through the final four innings of the game.
Camden rebounded in the home-half of the first, though. Paddy Matera led off with a single into left, and after a sacrifice-bunt over to second from Lloyd Turner, Marquez Smith singled to center putting runners on the corners with one out. Left fielder Brian Burgamy walked to load the bases in the next at-bat, and with the bases juiced, Colina flied out deep to center for the sacrifice-fly to cut the lead in half, 2-1. In the next at-bat, right fielder Eduardo Perez doubled off Gordon down the line plating two to give the Sharks the lead, 3-2.
Sugar Land tied it up in the top of the second off a solo home run (4) from Ramos, but again faltered in the bottom of the same inning. Camden used a home run of its own from Burgamy (5) to increase a 4-3 lead to 6-5 after an RBI-double from Smith.
The Skeeters countered again in the top of the fourth with some well placed extra-base hits. Matt Hagen led the inning off with a double to right, Iggy Suarez followed suit the opposite way cutting the lead down to two, 6-4, and Ramos again made his case for the cycle with a double of his own to bring the Sharks lead down to one, 6-5.
Burgamy hit his second home run of the game (6) in the fifth off Gordon to push lead back to two, 7-5, but real trouble came in the bottom of the eighth. Kelvin Villa came in for relief of Sean Morgan hoping to keep it manageable for the Skeeters offense in the top of ninth, but it was not to be.
With two outs in the inning and the score 8-5, Smith came up to bat with two outs and the bases loaded. On the ninth pitch of the at-bat, Smith sailed a hanging curve ball deep to left. The grand slam (3) was the third hit off Skeeters pitching this season and put the game out of reach 12-5.
