Lancaster Stormers News Release
Mike Loree tossed six shutout innings, pitching the Long Island Ducks to a 3-0 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers in the second half of a doubleheader Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium as the two clubs split the twin-bill.
Blake Gailen smacked a solo shot to deep right-center field in the 10th inning of the opener to give the Barnstormers a 4-3 victory.
In the bottom of the 10th, Josh Lansford (0-1) entered the game in relief of Jon Hunton. Following a strikeout of Tommy Everidge, Gailen nailed a liner into the Home Run Harbor net, snapping the deadlock for the crowd of 6,019 spectators at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Long Island had capped a tying comeback in the seventh inning off Jeff Bennett. After two quick outs, Bennett was reached for a check swing single that died up the third base line by James McOwne. The right-hander walked Josh Johnson, paving the way for Dan Lyons' game tying single up the middle.
Adam Godwin opened the game for Lancaster with a single to shallow center field and quickly stole second base. Tommy Everidge drove in Godwin with a two out single up the middle.
The Barnstormers continued their scoring efforts in the 2nd inning. Brad Boyer and Francisco Hernandez both reached base on singles. Godwin walked to load the bases. Fehlandt Lentini struck out, but Terry Tiffee found a hole between short and third, scoring both Boyer and Hernandez for a 3-0 lead.
McOwen was the first Duck to reach base off of starter John Halama when he dribbled a single up the first base line in the 3rd inning. Two batters later, Lyons drilled a pitch inside the first base bag, plating McOwen from second.
In the sixth, Ray Navarrete brought the Ducks within one when he slipped a base hit into left field, scoring Lyons.
Jason Urquidez (2-0) earned the win for Lancaster after pitching two innings in relief, striking out one and walking two. Josh Lansford (0-1) took the loss for Long Island in game one of the twin bill.
Loree (3-1) struck out six Barnstormer batters and walked none his six strong innings for Long Island in the nightcap. The Barnstormers had their only chance to score when Tiffee and Everidge stroked back-to-back two-out singles in the first. Gailen ripped a sharp liner, which was snagged on a leaping catch by second baseman Shawn Williams. No other Barnstormer advanced as far as second in the game.
Lorree's counterpart, JD Durbin (2-4), allowed six hits while walking five and fanning six. Only one of the three runs off him was earned.
Brandon Sing gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the first with a broken bat RBI single into center. Long Island struck for two more in the third. Lyons opened the inning with a solid single to right and moved up on a walk to Kraig Binick. Durbin caught Reid Gorecki on a third strike and induced a potential double play grounder to third out of Navarrete. Tiffee gloved the ball cleanly, but his high throw to second tipped off Brad Boyer's glove and rolled into right field as a run scored and Binick motored to third. Sing then skipped a grounder off Tiffee's backhanded attempt as a second run crossed the plate.
Lancaster begins a four game road trip against the Bridgeport Bluefish on Thursday at 7:05. Lancaster will send Dwayne Pollok (2-0) to oppose Gilbert De La Vara (3-2) in the series opener. The game will be aired on 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com and the I Heart Radio network.
