Lancaster Stormers News Release
Ryan Harvey blasted two of Lancaster's four homers, including a grand slam in the third inning, as the Barnstormers topped the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 13-9, at Regency Furniture Stadium on Wednesday evening to complete a sweep of a three-game series.
The victory, coupled with York's 2-1 loss at Bridgeport, jumped the Barnstormers' Freedom Division lead to six games with 11 to go. Lancaster's magic number stands at six.
Harvey got his huge night started with a double to right center in the second inning, eventually scoring Lancaster's third run of the night on a wild pitch.
However, it was in the third inning when he delivered the game's biggest blow. Fehlandt Lentini had already scored one run as Chin Lung Hu fired a throw past first baseman Jesse Gutierrez on a double play pivot. Jaime Pedroza singled to left, and Emerson Frostad walked, bringing Harvey to the plate with the bases loaded. The Lancaster DH, who had been 0-for-4 on the season in bases loaded chances launched a ball out of the yard to right center, giving Lancaster an 8-2 lead.
The Barnstormers continued the assault against Matthew Vasquez (4-3) in the fourth as Terry Tiffee cranked an RBI double into the right field corner, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Blake Gailen's sacrifice fly. Jaime Pedroza, who doubled in two runs in the first inning, launched his 11th homer of the season to left center for an 11-3 edge.
Harvey greeted James Baker with a monstrous homer to left leading off the fifth. One out later, Francisco Hernandez connected for his second homer of the year and a 13-4 lead.
The Barnstormers managed only one more hit on the night, and Southern Maryland kept fighting back.
Matt Padgett cracked a homer to start the bottom of the fifth, joining Brian Barton and Mike Daniel who had whacked leadoff blasts earlier in the game. Barton followed with a single, and Christian Lopez knocked home the sixth run off Mark Brackman (4-3) with a two-out single to right center.
Mike Johnston pitched a scoreless sixth inning, but Southern Maryland got to Beau Vaughan in the seventh. Barton, who had a perfect night, blooped a single to right on a check swing and scored in front of Jeremy Owens' booming two-run homer to left center. Lopez picked up his second double of the night with one out, and Daniel walked. Both runners moved up on Richard Giannotti's grounder to second, and Lopez scored on a balk.
Vaughan retired Chin Lung Hu on a bouncer back to the hill, and the bullpen held for the remainder of the night.
Lancaster returns home to host York in a four-game series beginning Friday at 7:00. John Halama (5-4) will take the mound for the Barnstormers. York will counter with left-hander Matt Chico (0-1).
