Lancaster Stormers News Release
LANCASTER, Pa.-The Lancaster Barnstormers will pay tribute to Hispanic heritage in the Lancaster area on Sept. 16 and 17 during the team's weekend series with the Atlantic City Surf.
Highlighting the weekend's events will be a game-worn jersey auction, the proceeds of which will benefit two youth sports organizations in the Lancaster community. Fans will have the chance to bid on tie-dyed jerseys worn by Barnstormers players during the game on Saturday, Sept. 16. The Barnstormers have raised an average of $10,000 in each of their three previous jersey auctions. This time, the proceeds will go to the Spanish American Lancaster Sports Association (SALSA) and Play Ball USA.
"The jersey auction is very important to SALSA baseball" SALSA director Sindo Lopez said. SALSA is a youth baseball program for more than 80 inner-city children.
"Our field is in bad condition and needs a lot of repairs and we're in need of new equipment," Lopez said.
Play Ball USA introduces baseball and softball to young people and encourages young players to read about the game's history and heroes.
"I think the Barnstormers visibility has helped us tremendously," Pennsylvania director of Play Ball USA Steve Fornadel said. "They're doing a neat job getting bats and balls into kids' hands and teaching them the game and also reading about some of the baseball history."
The weekend's events will conclude with Hispanic Heritage Day at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 17, sponsored by WLCH 91.3 and Raices De Todos. During the Barnstormers game against the Surf, outstanding members of Lancaster's Hispanic community will be honored. There will also be an appearance by Nickelodeon's Dora the Explorer and a post-game concert by Felih Rodriguez Exitos del Padrino de la Bachata.
"We're proud to honor Lancaster's Hispanic heritage and we're looking forward to thanking members of the Hispanic community for their support of the Barnstormers," Barnstormers General Manager Joe Pinto said. "And we hope to raise some money so more kids can get involved in the game of baseball."
Tickets for remaining Barnstormers home games are available by calling 717-509-3633 or online at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com.
