Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 14, 2006) - Long Island Ducks team officials today announced that they have signed outfielder Jayson Bass for the remainder of the 2006 season.
"Jayson was dominating in both leagues that he played in earlier this season," says Ducks general manager Michael Hirsch. "We are excited to be able to add his power and consistency to our lineup for our title hunt."
Bass comes to Long Island after splitting time with Monclova (AAA) of the Mexican League and Nashua of the Can Am League (Ind.). In just 58 games (205 at-bats) in Nashua and Mexico, the power-hitting outfielder clobbered 15 home runs, drove in 39 runs and had a combined batting average of .351. In a full season of action with Saltillo of the Mexican League in 2005, Bass hit .370 with 23 home runs and 91 RBI in 392 trips to the plate. Selected in the fifth round of the 1993 draft by the Detroit Tigers, the 14-year veteran has seen action in 1,310 minor league games, has hit 194 home runs and owns a career .292 average.
To make room for Bass on the roster, Long Island has placed two-time American League MVP Juan Gonzalez on the team's inactive list.
The Long Island Ducks are in their seventh season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. They have averaged over 100 percent attendance capacity of 6,002-seat Citibank Park in each of their first six seasons and are one of the most successful minor league sports franchises in the country.
