Lancaster Stormers News Release
Lancaster's seven-week solo reign at the top of the Freedom Division standings has come to an end. Now the Barnstormers are forced to share the lead with the red hot York Revolution.
Wes Bankston and Steve Moss clubbed back-to-back homers in the bottom of the third, overturning a Lancaster lead, and York went on to down the Barnstormers, 10-5, Sunday evening at Harbor Yard.
The Barnstormers have dropped three of their last four while York has won four straight to forge the tie with seven games left in the first half, including four head-to-head matchups next weekend.
On Sunday evening, Lancaster bolted out to a 4-0 lead. Tommy Everidge doubled home J.C. Holt in the first to grab an early edge. Three more would cross the plate against Matt Pike (5-2) in the second. Adam Calderone scorched a triple inside the first base bag and scored on a single to right by Angel Flores. Ozzie Chavez doubled to right, sending Flores to third. Brandon King grounded out to drive in one run, and Gilberto Mejia drove home the fourth Lancaster run with a sacrifice fly to left.
The rest of the game belonged to Bridgeport. Five consecutive base hits off Ross Peeples (6-3) in the bottom of the second produced three runs. In the third, Angel Chavez led off with a double looped down the right field line. Luis Lopez lined to third for the first out, before Bankston slammed his ninth homer of the season to left for a 5-4 lead. Moss followed with his second homer of the series and eighth of the season, hit over the screen to the walkway in front of the adjacent arena.
Lancaster narrowed the gap in the fourth inning. King led off with a single to right and moved up on Mejia's grounder to second. Holt launched a double to the alley in left center, cutting the Bluefish lead to 6-5, but Pike retired both Everidge and Fernando Seguignol to end the threat.
The final Barnstormer chance came in the fifth. Down, 7-5, the Barnstormers loaded the bases on two-out singles by Flores and King around a walk to Chavez. Pike got Mejia to fly out to left. The Barnstormers would manage only two singles for the remainder of the game.
Lancaster will open a three-game series at Camden on Tuesday evening. The Barnstormers will send right-hander Cesar Carrillo (2-4) to the hill against former Lancaster lefty Eddy Camacho (3-0). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed on sportsjuice.com.
NOTES: Calderone is 5-for-8 in his first two games...He tripled three times in his first five at bats...Holt and King have hit safely in five in a row...Lancaster turned a ground ball double play for the 12th straight game...It was their 73rd of the season...Bridgeport reached double figures for the first time since early June.
