
Ducks Avoid Sweep with 5-3 Win Over Patriots

Bridgewater, NJ- The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 5- 3 in front of 6,173 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday evening.
Wayne Lydon led off the bottom half of the first with a walk for Somerset, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Fernando Cortez for the 1-0 lead.
Matt Esquivel singled to reach base in the third for the Ducks then Matt Padgett blasted a two run homerun (8), his third of the series, to right center to put Long Island on top 2-1.
Long Island added two more runs the following inning on an RBI double by Javier Colina that scored both Kennard Jones and Ray Navarrete.
Colina made the score 5-1 with a solo home run (11) in the ninth inning.
The Patriots rallied in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI triple by Jeff Nettles and an RBI single by Joe Burke, but came up short with a 5-3 final.
Ducks starter Mark Diapoules (2-1) picked up the win, allowing a run on three hits in five innings pitched. Patriots starter Derell McCall (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in seven innings pitched. Ehren Wassermann earned his fourth save after coming in during the bottom of the ninth and retiring pinch hitter Justin Huber to end the game.
The 2011 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Monday night as the Patriots take on the Road Warriors at 5:05 pm. The game includes American Flag Baseballs for the first 2,000 fans in attendance and a Salute To The Flag Celebration presented by Operation Shoebox New Jersey.
