Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn. - July 3, 2011) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (28-28) came back to defeat the Lancaster Barnstormers (33-23) by a score of 10-5 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday night. Bridgeport has won three of the last four heading into this week's showdown with the Blue Crabs.
Matt Pike (5-2) struggled but picked up the victory. The righthanded starter tossed five innings while allowing five runs, ten hits and two walks for Bridgeport. Will Cunnane tossed two shutout innings in relief. Antonio Alfonseca did not allow a run in the eighth and Juan Rincon fired a scoreless ninth. Ross Peeples (6-3) suffered the loss. The Barnstormer starter gave up six runs in two-and-a-third frames of work. The bullpen gave up three runs the rest of the way.
The Bluefish bats came alive after trailing 4-0. Bridgeport scored three runs in each of the next two innings:
In the second, Wes Bankston led off with a double to leftcenter and scored on a single by Steve Moss to third. Brock Peterson followed with a single to push Moss to second. Danny Putnam laced a double to left to score Moss, but Peterson was thrown out at the plate. On the throw, Putnam advanced to third. The outfielder came home on a Michael Moras single to center.
Bridgeport took the lead in the third. Angel Chavez started the rally with a single. After an out had been recorded, Wes Bankston smacked a two-run shot to left. It was his first homer since June 17 and his eighth of the year to put the Bluefish ahead 5-4. Moss matched Bankston as the outfielder powered his seventh home run of the season. The solo shot to left gave the home team a two-run advantage.
The home team scored twice on wild pitches from opposing pitchers; once in the fourth and another in the sixth. A second runner came home in the sixth on a run-scoring single from Chavez. Lancaster scored once in the fourth but could not stop the Bluefish attack; Bankston led the way with three hits and was a triple short of the cycle. Chavez and Peterson each had three hit nights. Andres Perez added a solo shot in the eighth.
Luis Lopez remained 29 hits shy of 2,000 hits for his minor league career after going 0-4 on Sunday.
