Barnstormers Drop Skeeters In 10th

May 19, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Sugar Land Skeeters left a wide gap in the defense in the bottom of the 10th inning on Tuesday evening.

Keith Castillo found it.

Castillo blooped a single into left field with one out and the bases loaded, lifting the Barnstormers to a thrilling, 5-4 victory over Sugar Land in the opener of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster is now 3-1 on its current homestand.

After Travis Scott launched his second home run off the season off Zach Jackson (1-2) in the top of the 10th inning to give the Skeeters a 4-3 lead, Sugar Land went to closer Adrian Martin to close out the game. Yusuke Kajimoto reached base on a scratch hit in front of the plate to start the winning rally and was advanced by Tyler Bortnick's sacrifice bunt. Sugar Land intentionally walked Blake Gailen to put the winning run on base. Brian Cavazos-Galvez singled to center to load the bases, and a long plate appearance for Kevin Rivers resulted in a full count walk that forced home the tying run.

With Castillo at the plate, acting manager Jeff Scott brought his infielders up to the edge of the grass for the force at the plate but left his outfielders at normal depth.

Castillo hit a soft looper to left. Shortstop Beamer Weems made a wrong turn, and left fielder Denny Almonte's diving attempt came up just short, allowing Gailen to score with the winning run.

Sugar Land grabbed a 1-0 lead off Lancaster starter Casey Fossum in the first when Dustin Martin's two-out single to left center plated Willy Taveras who had walked and stolen second.

Lancaster surged ahead against Josh Geer in the third. Masato Fukae was hit by an 0-2 pitch. Kajimoto grounded a single into right, and Bortnick bunted his way aboard to load the bases. Blake Gailen found the hole on the right side to drive in one run. Cavazos-Galvez knocked in a second with a force play ground ball, and, after Rivers walked to load the bases, Castillo singled into right for a 3-1 lead.

Sugar Land's bullpen took over and retired 20 of the next 21 Lancaster hitters.

The Barnstormers' relief staff was having similar success until the top of the ninth, throwing six consecutive scoreless frames on only two hits. Delwyn Young and Dustin Martin each singled to start the ninth off Chad Beck. The Texas native reared back and struck out the next two hitters, but Beamer Weems singled to center to keep the rally alive, and Kevin Russo evened the score at 3-3 with a single smashed through the left side.

Lancaster sends Dan Osterbrock to the hill on Wednesday at 7:00 against right-hander Sean Gallagher (0-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: The Barnstormers stole three more bases in the game and are now 17-for-17 since May 10...Rivers has knocked in his first four runs of the season in the last three games, including one in Monday's suspended game...Castillo has four RBI on the homestand...Starter Bryan Evans, who was scheduled to pitch on Tuesday, was signed by the Colorado Rockies for Class AA New Britain earlier in the day.
