Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
LANCASTER, Pa. - The Sugar Land Skeeters suffered a walk-off loss in extra innings to the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday evening. After tying the game with two outs in the top of the ninth and taking the lead in the top of the tenth, Sugar Land surrendered a pair of runs in the bottom of the tenth to fall, 5-4. The loss drops the Skeeters to 10-15 on the year while Lancaster improves to 9-16.
Willy Taveras continued his hot-streak with the Skeeters by drawing a leadoff walk to open the game and stole his third base in as many days to kick off the contest before coming in to score on an RBI single from Dustin Martin. The left fielder for Sugar Land drove in his third run in the last two games and recorded his team-leading 13th-RBI in the top of the first.
After encountering little resistance in the first two innings, Sugar Land starter Josh Geer was unable to work his way out of trouble in the bottom of the third. Following a leadoff hit-by-pitch, Geer surrendered three-straight singles to Yusuke Kajimoto, Tyler Bortnick and Blake Gailen, which led to the first run for the Barnstormers. Brian Cavazos-Galvez legged out a fielder's choice to avoid a double play, allowing another run to cross the plate, giving Lancaster a 2-1 advantage when Keith Castillo singled to score Bortnick and expand the lead to 3-1.
Geer would be chased from the game following Castillo's single. The right-hander lasted just 2.1 innings while giving up three runs on six hits and one walk. James Parr picked up a strikeout and induced a flyout to end the threat in the third.
From the final two outs in the third to the bottom of the seventh, Skeeters pitching retired 13-straight Barnstormers, giving the offense a chance to mount a comeback. Parr pitched 2.2 innings, retiring all eight batters faced with three strikeouts while Ramon Delgado went 1.2 innings before being lifted after surrendering a double to Bortnick. Derrick Loop induced a one-pitch popup to strand the runner to end the seventh before the bearded-southpaw struck out a pair in the eighth.
Sugar Land scratched across the tying run in the top of the ninth, aided by back-to-back singles from Delwyn Young and Martin to open the frame. Chris Wallace and Denny Almonte each struck out before Beamer Weems notched a single up the middle, driving in Young and moving the tying run to second. With the single in the top of the ninth, Weems has reached base safely in 15-straight games. Kevin Russo poked a ball through the right-side and Martin avoided the tag at the plate to tie the game at three. Patrick Palmeiro hit a sharp grounder to third, but was thrown out at first on a bang-bang play to end the inning.
John Lujan pitched a perfect ninth to extend the game into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Travis Scott launched a mammoth of a home run to left, giving Sugar Land its first lead since the top of the first.
Adrian Martin surrendered a leadoff single in the bottom of the tenth to Kajimoto before the Barnstormers leadoff man moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following an intentional walk to Gailen, Cavazos Galvez notched a single to load the bases. Martin lost the battle on an eight-pitch walk to Keith Rivers, walking in the tying run. Castillo singled on a shallow popup to left that Almonte was unable to snare for the game-winning hit.
