Barnstormers Drop Pair At Long Island

Lancaster Stormers News Release

Former Lancaster right-hander Mark Rogers spun six no-hit innings against his former team on Saturday evening, pitching the Long Island Ducks to a 6-1 victory over the Barnstormers in the second game of a day-night doubleheader at Bethpage Ballpark.

Earlier, the Ducks held off a late Barnstormers rally to trip up Lancaster, 3-2.

The Barnstormers have now lost six straight, their longest losing streak in two years.

Rogers (1-1) struck out eight batters and walked only one in his six-inning performance. The only other baserunner during that stretch for the Barnstormers was Brian Cavazos-Galvez, who reached on a one-out bobble by shortstop Blake Davis in the second.

As soon as Rogers left, the Barnstormers broke up the no-hit bid as Blake Gailen opened the seventh with a solid single to center. They finally scored when Cavazos-Galvez plated Michael Broad from second with a ground ball in the ninth.

Marcus Walden, making his Atlantic League debut for the Barnstormers fell into trouble in the first, walking Prentice Redman and hitting Lew Ford with a pitch. Cody Puckett found the alley in left center for a two-run double and the early 2-0 lead.

Walden then faced the minimum of 14 batters over the next 4 2/3 innings but never got an out in the sixth. He walked Bryan Sabatella and Redman in succession. Ford delivered both with a two-run triple to right center and scored on a wild pitch by reliever Cody Eppley.

A double by Ford and single by Reegie Corona finished off the Long Island scoring in the eighth.

In the afternoon game, Long Island struck for three runs in the bottom of the second off Bryan Woodall (0-2), who was making his first Lancaster start. Jon Griffin singled off Tyler Bortnick's glove and moved up on Jose Morales' looping single to center. Corona doubled home one, and Morales crossed the plate on a ground out by Davis. Dan Lyons singled to center for a 3-0 lead.

The Barnstormers squandered scoring chances in the third and fifth innings before finally reaching the scoreboard in the sixth. Bortnick doubled inside the third base bag to lead off the inning and scored on Cavazos-Galvez' two-out lined single into left center.

Lancaster put itself in position to tie the game in the seventh. Pinch hitter Keith Castillo walked and took third when Lance Zawadzki doubled into the left field corner. Reliever Ryan Kussmaul got Masato Fukae to fly out to shallow center, before Yusuke Kajimoto drove in a run with a sac fly to center. Bortnick grounded out to end the game.

Nick Struck (1-0) threw two innings of relief to earn the win.

The Barnstormers will send left-hander Dan Osterbrock (0-1) to the hill on Mother's Day afternoon against right-hander Mickey Jannis (1-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cellphone app, beginning at 1:15.

NOTES: Cavazos-Galvez has six RBI in the series...Chad Beck kept his perfect ERA intact, but Scott Patterson was nicked for the run in the eighth.
