Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

CAMDEN, N.J. - The Sugar Land Skeeters suffered their third-straight loss on Saturday evening, falling to the Camden Riversharks, 4-2 at Campbell's Field in New Jersey. Mike Costanzo hit a pair of home runs and drove in all four of the Riversharks' runs. The loss drops the Skeeters to 8-8 while Camden improves to 9-6.

After allowing just one earned run through his first three starts, Sean Gallagher struggled with command early. Camden took advantage of the Skeeters' starter's troubles in the bottom of the first. After retiring the first two batters, the Boston native gave up a walk to Ryan Strieby and a single to Jeremy Barfield that right fielder Kevin Russo was unable to hold onto after laying out for the ball. Mike Costanzo took advantage of the extra opportunity, hitting a three-run home run to right, giving Camden an early 3-0 lead.

Sugar Land cut into the Camden lead after Riversharks' starter Wes Torrez was lifted in the fifth inning. Russo poked a single just over the head of the third basemen into left. The former New York Yankee advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch before Patrick Palmeiro roped a double down the left field line, pushing across Russo. Edwin Gomez singled deep in the hole to shortstop, moving Palmeiro to third. Gomez would be erased on a double play ball off the bat of Amadeo Zazueta, but Palmeiro would come in to score and cut the deficit to one, 3-2.

Gallagher settled in after the first inning woes, surrendering just two hits over his final five innings of work. He was saddled with the loss, however, as the offense was only able to produce two runs in the setback. The right-hander walked three and struck out four over six innings on the rubber.

After Andrew Johnston escaped a jam in the bottom of the seventh with runners on the corners, Cory VanAllen entered in the eighth with one out for a lefty-lefty matchup with Costanzo. The Riversharks' third-basemen lifted his second home run of the game over the wall in right to give Camden an insurance run and a 4-2 lead going to the top of the ninth.

Camden closer Matt Gorgen surrendered a one-out single to Chris Wallace, but a popup to second and a strikeout ended the Skeeters' hopes of a comeback.
