Barnstormers Drop Fifth Straight

May 9, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Long Island Ducks chained four hits to produce three runs in the second and held off a late charge by the Lancaster Barnstormers as the host Ducks sent the Barnstormers to their fifth consecutive loss, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Bethpage Ballpark.

Jon Griffin led off the second with a smash that deflected off third baseman Tyler Bortnick's glove into left field. Jose Morales chipped a single into shallow center, and Reegie Corona drove home the game's first run with a double into the left field corner. Blake Davis' grounder to second produced another, and Dan Lyons capped the three-run inning off Bryan Woodall (0-2) with a flared single to center.

Woodall and Shunsuke Watanabe combined to limit the Ducks to five scattered singles over the remainder of the game.

Lancaster recovered one run in the sixth off lefty reliever Tommy Organ, the third Ducks pitcher of the afternoon. Bortnick grounded a double inside the third base bag to open the inning and scored on Brian Cavazos-Galvez' single lined into left center.

Long Island went to closer Ryan Kussmaul in the seventh. He walked pinch hitter Keith Castillo to start the inning, and Lance Zawadzki, who went 3-for-3, doubled into the left field corner to put the tying runs in scoring position. Kussmaul battled back and retired Masato Fukae on a shallow fly ball to center for the first out. Yusuke Kajimoto got Castillo home with a fly to left, and Zawadzki was able to grab third on Prentice Redman's throw home. Bortnick grounded to third to end the game.

Nick Struck (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings in his Long Island debut to earn the win.

The two teams meet again this evening at 6:35. Lancaster will send Marcus Walden to the mound for his first Atlantic League appearance. He will be opposed by former Lancaster right-hander Mark Rogers. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:15.

NOTES: Both Blake Gailen (10 games) and David Cooper (15 games) lost on base streaks...Dan Coury extended his hitting streak to five games...Zawadzki is batting .359 (14-39) after a 2-for-17 start...The five-game losing streak ties the longest for the Barnstormers last season.
