Lancaster Stormers News Release

Lancaster rapped out some big hits, and Camden made some big errors on Friday evening as the Barnstormers coasted to a 9-3 victory over the Riversharks at Campbell's Field.

The win kept the Barnstormers within two games of the division leading Somerset Patriots, who downed Southern Maryland, 8-3.

Friday night's game was decided by the third inning. In fact, it may have been decided in the first five batters.

Lloyd Turner was hit by a pitch by Brad Knox (4-8) leading off the game. L.J. Biernbaum hit a slow roller to the left side on a hit-and-run. Juan Francia retreated to get the ball but bobbled it for an error. Bryant Nelson's grounder toward the middle was mishandled by Teuris Olivares for a second error, loading the bases.

Aaron Herr cleared the bases with a double down the third base line, and Reggie Taylor followed with a two-run homer off the top of the scoreboard in right field as the Barnstormers jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

Jason Simontacchi struggled early, allowing eight hits to the first 12 batters he faced. Four of those hits came in the first inning, but Chris Walker was thrown out stealing in front of Sean Smith's homer, and the Riversharks wasted two additional singles as the lead stayed 5-1.

Lancaster picked up a pair of unearned runs in the second as Olivares both dropped a pop fly by Nelson and threw away a potential double play on the pivot.

Again Camden answered. Richie Robnett doubled to left center, and Juan Francia beat out a bunt up the third base line. Matt Ceriani brought one across with a squibber that was handled by catcher Octavio Martinez up the first base side. Walker got another across with a double to right center, but the Barnstormers cut him down at third base on a perfect 9-4-5 relay, ending the threat.

More help came from the Camden defense in the top of the third. After a single by Adam Witter opened the inning, Martinez was hit by a pitch. Michael Woods struck out for the first out. With Turner at the plate, Martinez was caught off first base by Ceriani and was mired in a rundown. First baseman Raul Padron made a high throw chasing Martinez toward second, and both runners advanced safely. Turner failed to cash in, lining out to shortstop, but L.J. Biernbaum made the Riversharks pay with a double into the right field corner for the final 9-3 margin.

Simontacchi (5-6) gave the Barnstormers a much needed seven innings. The right-hander yielded 10 hits and two walks, striking out four. Ross Peeples went the rest of the way, allowing one hit over two scoreless innings.

Camden will host the Barnstormers at 5:35 on Saturday with Wayne Franklin (1-2) making the start for Lancaster against right-hander Gabriel Alfaro (2-5).
