Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers were four outs from cruising to a series sweep at Southern Maryland and still one out from nailing it down.
Brooms then had to be packed away.
Ben Harrison belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to narrow the gap, and Jeremy Owens singled home two more with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as the Blue Crabs shocked the Barnstormers, 11-10, Thursday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium.
Lancaster appeared to be on the way to the sweep with a six-run seventh inning. Josh Johnson drew a leadoff walk from Ryan Speier. Lloyd Turner's bunt in front of home plate was quickly grabbed by catcher Christian Lopez, whose throw to second was wide, enabling Johnson to reach safely. L.J. Biernbaum placed a bunt down the third base side and beat it out as Speier and third baseman Casey Benjamin appeared to miscommunicate. Bryant Nelson gave Lancaster a 6-5 lead with a two-run double into the right field corner. Aaron Herr knocked in one more with a single through the left side, and a fourth run of the inning came home on a sacrifice fly. Adam Witter smoked a two-run homer down the left field line off Bryan Dumesnil to cap the inning with Lancaster ahead, 10-5.
The Barnstormers got out of the seventh with the lead intact as Tim McNab entered in time to get Jamar Hill to ground out with the bases loaded.
McNab had a much harder time in the eighth. Casey Benjamin led off with an infield single, and Eric Crozier tore a single into right, moving Benjamin to third. Travis Garcia picked up a walk to load the bases. McNab retired Owens on a shallow fly ball. Christian Lopez rolled a grounder on the right side to drive home one run, trimming the lead to 10-6. McNab took Harrison to 0-2 before giving up a three-run homer to left center as the Crabs closed to within one.
Tim Hamulack (4-5) was summoned for the ninth and gave up back-to-back hits to Shaun Cumberland and Hill. One out later, Crozier walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Hamulack fanned Garcia, but could not get through Owens whose grounder skipped low through the hole into left field easily scoring Cumberland and Hill to win the game.
Earlier, Reggie Taylor had a pair of doubles and two RBI, and Bryant Nelson homered as Lancaster had a 4-3 lead. Local player Justin Armiger had hit a two-run, game-tying homer in the fourth for Southern Maryland.
Jim Ed Warden (5-3) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.
The Barnstormers travel to Camden for the start of a three-game series on Friday evening. Lancaster will throw Jason Simontacchi (4-6) against Brad Knox (4-7).
NOTES: Witter has nine homers and 21 RBI in 22 games since coming off the DL...Ryan Mulhern had a sacrifice fly, his ninth of the season, leaving him one shy of his own club record...Nelson had four hits in a game for the third time...Lancaster's pitching gave up a season-high 12 walks...Harrison and Cumberland drew a combined seven...McNab has allowed 17 earned runs in 9.2 IP against Southern Maryland.
