Patriots Power Past Blue Crabs 8-3

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 8-3 at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run by first baseman Joe Burke (4).

Somerset added to more runs on back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the second inning by left fielder Noah Hall (8) and catcher J.R. Hopf (3) for a 3-0 advantage.

The Blue Crabs got on the board with a run in the top of the third inning. Left fielder Shaun Cumberland singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Eric Crozier to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Patriots extended the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Center fielder Wayne Lydon and Burke each singled, and after Lydon was thrown out trying to steal, right fielder Michael Hernandez and third baseman Jeff Nettles each drew walks to load the bases. Designated hitter Josh Pressley followed with a grand slam to center (20) to give Somerset a 7-1 lead.

Southern Maryland scored again in the top of the fifth inning. Cumberland doubled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by catcher Christian Lopez to make the score 7-2.

The Blue Crabs added a run in the top of the seventh inning after third baseman Casey Benjamin singled, Crozier doubled, and Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Benjamin and cut the lead to 7-3.

Somerset scored in the bottom of the eighth inning after Hall tripled and scored on an RBI double by Lydon for the 8-3 final.

Patriots starter Jonathon Ellis (3-2) got the win after allowing two runs on four hits in five innings pitched. Craig Anderson (9-3) suffered the loss for Southern Maryland, allowing seven runs on six hits in three innings pitched.

The Somerset Patriots 2010 Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Saturday when the Patriots take on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at 7:05 pm.
