BARNSTORMERS CLUB CRABS, 7-0

May 3, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver would have loved Sunday afternoon's Lancaster Barnstormers victory over Southern Maryland.

The Barnstormers used pitching, defense and three run homers, to quote the legendary skipper of the Baltimore Orioles, in a 7-0 triumph over the Blue Crabs in the rubber game of the three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster jumped ahead of Southern Maryland for second place and could tie for the top spot in the Freedom Division, pending the outcome of the Sugar Land Skeeters game at Long Island.

Bryan Evans provided the pitching. Evans (1-2) checked Southern Maryland on three singles, two walks and a hit batsman over his seven innings of work, striking out six. He only found trouble in the sixth inning, issuing walks to Gustavo Molina and Antone DeJesus, two of the first three batters of the inning.

That marked the only time in the game that the Blue Crabs advanced a runner into scoring position.

Cody Eppley and Jason Urquidez finished the combined three-hit shutout that included 10 strikeouts of Southern Maryland batters.

Defensively, the Barnstormers turned two double plays, and Tyler Bortnick robbed Fred Lewis with a smothering stop of a grounder toward the left side hole to keep Southern Maryland from piecing together threats.

The third part of Weaver's formula came from Blake Gailen and David Cooper. Gailen rode a pitch from Jake Hale (1-1) high onto the walkway in right center field following a pair of singles in the third as Lancaster took a 3-0 edge.

Two innings later, Kevin Rivers led off with a double, his second hit of the day. He stood at third with two outs when Southern Maryland manager Stan Cliburn opted to walk Gailen intentionally. Brian Cavazos-Galvez spoiled the ploy by beating out an infield single on the right side as Rivers scored. Cooper than roped a liner onto the picnic tents in right field for the 7-0 final advantage.

Lancaster is off on Monday before entertaining the York Revolution on Tuesday evening. The Barnstormers will send Dan Osterbrock (0-0) to the hill against fellow southpaw Rommie Lewis (1-0). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: Cooper's homer extended his hitting streak to 11...Cooper and shortstop Lance Zawadzki have each batted safely in six straight while Cavazos-Galvez has a five-game skein working...Evans became the first Lancaster pitcher to extend past six innings this season and gave the club its third straight quality start...Urquidez fanned the side after a leadoff walk in the ninth and now has seven strikeouts in four innings for the year...Rivers is 5-for-8 in the team's two Sunday wins...Lancaster has not been scored upon on Sunday, beating the opposition, 13-0...With the three RBI on the home run, Gailen now has 201 in his Barnstormers career.
