Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
LONG ISLAND, N.Y. - The Sugar Land Skeeters snapped a two-game losing streak and salvaged a win in extra innings in the series finale against Long Island with an 8-4 victory over the Long Island Ducks on Sunday at Bethpage Ballpark. The Skeeters climb back above .500 at 6-5 while the Ducks fall to 6-4 on the spring.
Beamer Weems led the offense with a 4-for-6 performance with a huge 10th-inning home run to help the Skeeters to victory. Delwyn Young, Patrick Palmeiro and Amadeo each notched three-hit performances in the win. John Lujan earned the win after picking up four outs in the eighth and ninth.
Long Island ended Sugar Land starting pitcher Sean Gallagher's no-hit and earned run streak early in the contest. In the bottom of the first, Prentice Redman hit his first home run of the spring to stake the Ducks to a 1-0 lead.
Despite the early long ball, Gallagher settled into the game nicely, surrendering just three more hits over the next six innings and keeping the Ducks off the scoreboard giving the offense a chance to take the lead.
The Skeeters were able to push across the equalizer in the top of the sixth off Ducks' starter Eric Niesen. After a four-game hiatus, Young returned to the lineup and continued to stroke the ball, extending his hitting streak to five games. The designated hitter roped a leadoff double to left in the sixth before Weber picked up his second RBI in as many days with a single into center to tie the game at one.
Sugar Land took the lead in the seventh, thanks to a two-out double from Young. Zazueta deposited a one-out single into right for his second hit of the afternoon. Weems recorded his third hit of the game on a single into the centerfield alley, allowing Zazueta to go from first to third. Young picked up his first RBI of the season on a double down the right field line, giving the Skeeters a 2-1 lead in the late goings.
The Skeeters added an insurance run in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 3-1 with a two-out rally. Travis Scott hit a double into the left-center gap before Palmeiro singled off the glove of pitcher, Hunter Ambriz, moving Scott to third. Zazueta remained perfect at the plate with a single into center for his third hit of the ballgame, scoring Scott easily from third.
James Parr entered in relief of Gallagher in the bottom of the eighth. After a groundout to start the inning, Mike Blanke doubled to left to bring the tying run to the plate. Parr gave up a walk to Reegie Corona before a big strikeout of Anthony Vega for the second out of the inning. Bryan Sabatella worked a full-count walk to load the bases. After forcing the count to full against Redman, the Ducks' center fielder pulled a ball through the right side, scoring a pair and allowing Long Island to tie the game and chase Parr from the game. Lujan worked out of a bases-loaded jam after surrendering a walk by inducing an infield popup to Cody Puckett.
After exchanging zeroes in the ninth, Dustin Martin gave the Skeeters the lead in the top of the tenth. Scott worked a one-out, seven-pitch walk before Palmeiro picked up his second-straight infield single as pitcher Patrick Crider was unable to throw to first as he failed to get a good grip on the ball. On the eighth-pitch of his at-bat, Martin lined a single into center to score Scott from second and give Sugar Land an extra-inning lead. With runners on the corners, Weems cleared the bases with a three-run blast to left and push the advantage to 7-3. Young followed up Weems' shot with a no-doubter home run to left and chase Crider from the game.
Andrew Carpenter surrendered a run to the Ducks in the tenth, but was able to maintain the lead and complete the comeback win.
