Lancaster Stormers News Release
Once again, the Lancaster Barnstormers fell victim to one big inning.
Sugar Land struck for seven runs in the top of the fifth en route to a 9-5 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers Thursday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The loss cost Lancaster its first series sweep of the season and a chance to jump into second place in the Freedom Division.
Denny Almonte led off the fifth with a single into center off Marcus Walden (0-2). Almonte stole second. Willy Taveras was hit by a pitch, and Walden walked the next two batters to force home a run, cutting Lancaster's lead to 3-2.
Pete Andrelczyk took over and nearly pitched the Barnstormers out of the inning. He struck out Dustin Martin for the first out and got Chris Wallace to hit a bouncer toward second base. That hopper did not get to the second base bag for an easy 6-3 inning ending double play. Instead, shortstop Lance Zawadzki was forced to field the play ahead of the bag. He tried to flip the ball backwards to Yusuke Kajimoto covering the bag at second and missed his target as the game was tied at 3-3. Beamer Weems took Andrelczyk into the right field corner for a two-run double, and one out later, Patrick Palmeiro singled to drive home two more.
An error allowed the seventh run of the inning to score.
Earlier Delwyn Young and Blake Gailen exchanged home runs, and the Barnstormers grabbed a 3-1 lead on an RBI single by Brandon Jones and sacrifice fly by Zawadzki.
Jones and Tyler Bortnick had RBI doubles later in the game for Lancaster.
Matt Wright (3-0) earned the win for the Skeeters, allowing four hits and striking out seven in the first five innings.
The Barnstormers head to Southern Maryland for a four-game Memorial Day Weekend series against the division-leading Blue Crabs. Bryan Woodall (0-2) will make the start for the Barnstormers against newcomer Jon Leicester, a former Cubs and Orioles right-hander. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Gailen, including Monday's suspended game, hit five home runs in the weeklong homestand...Unofficially, he now has 58 Barnstormers' home runs, three short of the franchise career record, held by Lance Burkhart...Bortnick has hit safely in eight straight but does not have a hit in the suspended game which could break the streak...Jones is 4-for-7 since coming to Lancaster...Andrelczyk threw four innings, his longest stint as a Barnstormer.
