Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers rapped out 18 hits on Saturday evening. They needed every one.
Those 18 hits produced an 11-7 win over the York Revolution as the Barnstormers rebuilt their lead to two games over both York and Somerset in the Freedom Division. The game was played in front of 8,069, the sixth largest crowd in franchise history.
Lancaster raced out to an early 7-1 lead against starter Jarod Plummer (3-3). Reggie Taylor singled home Adam Witter in the first, then the Barnstormers struck for four unearned tallies in the second. A double by Ryan Mulhern and Scott Grimes' mishandling of a fly ball to deep center by Octavio Martinez put runners at second and third with one out. Plummer struck out Joe Gaetti and got a quick two strikes on Lloyd Turner. The Lancaster second baseman rode the next pitch into right field for a two-run single. Following another walk to Witter, Bryant Nelson lined a two-run double into the alley in right center for a 5-1 advantage.
Taylor led off the third with a homer, his 17th of the season, a blast over the back wall in right center. Singles by Mulhern and Martinez put the Barnstormers in position to strike again, and Turner capitalized on the opportunity with a double down the first base line as the Barnstormers cruised to a 7-1 lead.
Josh Hall allowed a bloop hit to Ian Bladergroen and a ground ball single to Chuck Jeroloman in the fourth but appeared to be out of trouble by striking out Grimes. Martinez blocked the third strike pitch in the dirt and chased it up the first base line. His throw to Mulhern appeared to be in time, but Mulhern could not find the handle. Grimes reached safely, and Bladergroen came around to score. Vic Rodriguez singled to center to plate another, and Grimes scored when Ramon Castro slapped a hard grounder down the third base line, and Aaron Herr made a low throw to first which bounced beyond Mulhern.
Nelson clubbed a homer down the right field line to start the home fourth, as the Barnstormers retook the lead by four. From there, the offense stopped producing runs, and the Revolution whittled away at the Barnstormers advantage.
Hall (10-5) walked Grimes to start the sixth and allowed a one-out single to Castro. Jose Herrera greeted lefty Ross Peeples with an RBI single lashed up the middle. Taylor made a sliding grab of Steve Haake's liner to right for the second out before Erold Andrus brought home another run with a single lined into right. Peeples finally retired Bladergroen, who already had two doubles and a single, on a foul pop up to third base to end the inning.
The Revolution struck again in the seventh. Sandy DeLeon led off with a single to right and was forced at second on a one-out bunt by Grimes. Grimes stole second and raced for third on a high throw by Josh Johnson. Rodriguez took care of the run with a single into right.
Lancaster finally put the game away with three runs in the eighth. The Barnstormers loaded the bases on two walks and a single yielded by Jason Richardson. The right-hander recovered to strike out Ryan Mulhern for the first out. Michael Woods knocked a fly ball off the wall in right for an RBI single, though the Barnstormers had runners stack up at third base, and Reggie Taylor was tagged for the second out of the inning. Johnson followed with a single up the middle to score two, giving the four run margin.
With that, McNab remained in the game, yielding two hits with two outs in the ninth before nailing down his seventh save.
The Barnstormers and Revolution wrap up the three-game series on Sunday at 6:00 with Jose Sanchez (4-9) getting the start against Matt DeSalvo (0-0).
