
Patriots Collect 14 Hits in 6-1 Win

Bridgewater, N.J, Aug. 14, 2010) - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 6-1 Saturday evening at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, New Jersey.
The Patriots pushed ahead in the home third inning, sending eight batters to the plate against Matt Smith. Three straight hits capped by a Jason Belcher RBI single made a 1-0 game. A two-out walk put runners on the corners for Jeff Nettles, who extended the lead with a two-run single to left and it was 3-0. In the fourth, Joe Burke laid down a sacrifice bunt as the Patriots executed a suicide squeeze to plate their fourth run of the ballgame.
Newark notched a run in the visitor's fourth inning as Elijah Dukes came home to score on a Daryle Ward one-out RBI single. Josh Miller scattered just four more hits over his next three frames to keep the Bears' bats at bay.
Somerset padded the lead in the seventh with another long frame as seven hitters stepped into the batter's box. The Patriots collected four straight two-out singles, including RBI singles by Burke and Elliott Ayala to move ahead by five runs.
Miller (9-8) got the win, firing seven innings, allowing just a run on eight hits, with four strikeouts. Ben Grezlovski provided two scoreless innings of relief and collected three strikeouts. Smith (6-11) took the loss, allowing six runs on 13 hits, while striking out four over seven innings and 130 pitches. Armando Benitez worked scoreless eighth for Newark and picked up two more strikeouts to push his total to 37 for the season.
The season series concluded between Newark and Somerset with a Sunday evening tilt. Game time is set for 5:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark. The Bears return home a short three-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday, August 17.
