Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Designated hitter Matt Craig belted a walk-off RBI double to the left-centerfield wall in the tenth inning to give the Blue Crabs a 3-2 victory over the Long Island Ducks Saturday evening before a crowd of 4,688 at Regency Furniture Stadium. Craig went 2-for-4 overall with a home run and 2 RBI. Long Island LHP and former Blue Crab Randy Keisler struck out seven through six innings and in one stretch retired 13 consecutive batters. Meanwhile, RHP Joe Newby also went six innings with four strikeouts for a no decision. Craig put the Blue Crabs on the board in the first with his solo homer to left-centerfield, his 13th of the season. Southern Maryland threatened to score again the next inning, but shortstop Travis Garcia and centerfielder Jeremy Owens were stranded after hitting consecutive one out singles. The Ducks took a 2-1 lead in the third when designated hitter John Rodriguez crushed a two run homer into deep rightfield. Rodriguez's ninth homer of the year drove in second baseman Ray Navarrete, who had reached base on a fielder's choice to third. First baseman Eric Crozier tied the game when he blasted a home run down the rightfield line and out of Regency Furniture Stadium to begin the seventh. It was his team best 18th homer and 57th RBI of the year. Both clubs were held scoreless through the eighth and ninth, forcing extra innings. The Crabs wasted no time in the bottom of the tenth as second baseman Casey Benjamin drew a leadoff walk, and Craig followed with his RBI double. It was the sixth walk-off win this season and 18th all-time in the Blue Crabs three year history. The Blue Crabs bullpen pitched four scoreless innings, and RHP Steve Palazzolo earned his first win of the season. Ducks' righty Benny Cepeda (0-1) suffered the loss. At 65-40, the first place Blue Crabs maintain the best overall record in the Atlantic League, and are 24-11 in the second half. The Blue Crabs will be back in action Sunday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium, in the finale of this three-game series against the Long Island Ducks. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. with LHP Daryl Harang (2-2, 6.46) on the mound for Long Island, against LHP Craig Anderson (8-2, 3.59) for Southern Maryland.
