Manchester Monarchs News Release
EL SEGUNDO, CA- Left wing Kip Brennan and center Scott Barney have been assigned to the Manchester Monarchs by the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League. Including the latest additions, the 2002-03 Manchester Monarchs preseason roster consists of 28 players (15 forwards, 10 defensemen, and three goaltenders).
Brennan, 22, returns to the Queen City after participating in several games for the Monarchs during their inaugural season. The 6-foot-4, 228-pound native of Kingston, Ontario totaled four goals, one assist, and five points in 44 games of action. The Kings fourth round selection (103rd overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft also led the Monarchs with 269 penalty minutes. Brennan's ability to stir the pot also earned him a brief call-up with the Kings last year, and in four NHL games he totaled 22 penalty minutes.
Barney, 23, missed the last three seasons while recovering from back injuries and came to the Kings 2002 Training Camp after signing a professional tryout contract. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound pivotman was originally a second round draft choice (29th overall) of the Kings in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. A native of Oshawa, Ontario, Barney agreed to a one year contract with the Kings on Wednesday.
The Manchester Monarchs also on Thursday released six players from their 2002 preseason roster. Five of the players were assigned to the Reading Royals of the East Coast Hockey League, including forwards Brian McCullough, Mike Pomichter, Brandon Dietrich, and Brad Rooney, and defenseman Antoine Bergeron. Also released by the Monarchs was defenseman Anthony Belza.
The Monarchs return to preseason action on Friday, October 4 when they travel north for a contest with the Portland Pirates. Game time at the Central Maine Civic Center in Lewiston, ME is set for 7:05 p.m.
Manchester next meets the Lowell Lock Monsters at the Salem ICEnter on Saturday, October 5. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. Tickets for the game are $8, and they can be purchased at the Monarchs ProShop (cash only) or at the Salem ICEenter.
The Monarchs embark on their second season at the Verizon Wireless Arena when they renew their regular season rivalry with the Lock Monsters next week. The puck drops at 7:35 p.m. on Friday, October 11, and the game will be broadcast live on WMUR Television with Charlie Sherman serving as the play-by-play host.
