(Rochester, NY)... Craig Charron announced his retirement today in The Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial, a building that holds a lot of memories for the Rochester Americans center.

The native of North Easton, Mass., played five seasons with the Rochester Americans. In the process, he registered 122 goals and 190 assists for 312 points. He finishes his Amerk career ranked 15th all-time on the franchise's all-time goal-scoring list, 10th in assists and 11th all-time in points. He also is 19th on the franchise's all-time games played list (335).

In his 12 seasons as a professional in North America, he registered 273 goals and 410 assists for 683 points. Three times he was named to the American Hockey League All-Star Game, the last was in 2000 at the Kodak AHL All-Star Classic in Rochester. In 1997-98, Charron received the AHL's Fred T. Hunt Award for sportsmanship, determination and dedication to hockey. Rochester was a place that Charron thrived during his five seasons, as he played for Rochester's sixth Calder Cup winning team in 1996. He was also named the team MVP during the 1995-96 and 1997-98 seasons. He won the Amerks' scoring trophy in 1995-96 and 1997-98, and was named the recipient of the team's Fairand/O'Neil Sportsmanship award in 1996-97 and 1997-98. Charron won the McCulloch Trophy in 1996-97 for his service to the Rochester community as well.

Last season Charron was named the Amerk Booster Club's Most Popular Player for the second time (1997-98 and 2001-02). During the 2001-02 campaign, he registered 24 points (12+12) in 43 games as Rochester finished second in the Central Division and advanced to the Calder Cup playoffs.

During his career, Charron played for East Coast Hockey League teams in Winston-Salem, Cincinnati, Birmingham and Dayton. He also had stints with International Hockey League teams in Albany, Cincinnati, Kalamazoo and Fort Wayne. But Charron spent the majority of his career in the AHL, playing in Rochester, Lowell, St. John's, Fredericton and Cornwall. He also played with the US National Team in 1994-95 and spent the 1993-94 season in Sweden.

Charron graduated from UMass-Lowell with a Business/Marketing degree. He was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round (25th overall) of the 1989 NHL Supplemental Draft.
