Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa (JUNE 25, 2012) - Quad Cities River Bandits outfielder Anthony Garcia has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week for June 18-24 following his big offensive series last weekend against the Peoria Chiefs. Garcia went 6-for-11 with a double, a home run, four runs and three RBIs as the River Bandits won two of three games to start the second half.
Garcia, 20, is the second River Bandit to be named Midwest League Player of the Week this season, joining infielder Tyler Rahmatulla, who won the award for June 4-10 to become the first River Bandit named Player of the Week since Oscar Taveras won the honor for Aug. 22-28, 2011. Rahmatulla was promoted to advanced Class-A Palm Beach June 18.
Garcia had a career-high four hits in a 12-11 loss Sunday at Peoria. He hit his career-best eighth home run of the season and scored three runs while driving in three. He now ranks fourth in the Midwest League with a .521 slugging percentage.
Garcia, a native of Carolina, Puerto Rico, was selected by the Cardinals out of San Juan Educational School in the 18th round of the 2009 draft. That summer he hit .235 in 23 games for the rookie-level GCL Cardinals.
In 2010, Garcia played 41 games for the GCL Cardinals and rookie-level Johnson City Cardinals. He hit a combined .286 with five home runs and 21 RBIs.
Last season Garcia hit .308 with six home runs and 31 RBIs in 51 games for Johnson City, which won the Appalachian League Championship. He also ranked second among all Cardinals minor leaguers with a .407 on-base percentage and was third with a .935 on-base-plus-slugging (OPS).
This season, Garcia did not commit an error in his first 28 games in the outfield. In 58 games, he already has career highs in hits (62), doubles (21), home runs, RBIs (42) and bases on balls (22). He had career highs with six RBIs and 10 total bases while hitting two home runs in a 20-3 win over the Beloit Snappers May 30. Since then, Garcia has hit six home runs with 19 RBIs in his last 18 games.
