Chiefs Start Road Trip With 2-1 Monday Win

Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs earned their second straight one-run win on Monday night and started the six-game roadtrip with a 2-1 victory over the Clinton LumberKings. The win puts the Chiefs at 2-2 on the half and 37-36 on the season.

In the bottom of the second inning Chiefs shortstop Javier Baez left the game after making a bare-handed play for the second out. He snagged a deflected grounder and threw to first in one motion before calling out the coaching staff and departing. Anthony Giansanti entered the game at third base with Wes Darvill sliding over to shortstop.

The Chiefs brought across the first run of the game in the top of the third against Jordan Shipers. Oliver Zapata led off with a single to center and moved to third on a double off the right-field wall by Zeke DeVoss. With one out Dustin Geiger got the Chiefs on the board with a sacrifice fly to center field. With DeVoss at third, Shipers escaped the inning with a strikeout of Paul Hoilman.

Clinton came right back in the bottom of the inning against Zach Cates with a two-out rally. Jamal Austin worked a full count before lacing a single to right field. He stole second and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw by Cates. Nate Melendres tied the game with a bouncing-ball single into left field before Cates got out of the inning.

Pin-Chieh Chen started the eighth inning by drawing a walk from Clinton reliever David Colvin. Chen moved to second as Geiger grounded out and scored on a single to center from Giansanti. Clinton put runners on the corners in the eighth inning but DeVoss made a nice running catch in shallow right field to end the inning.

Cates allowed one run on five hits, all singles, over 4 2/3 innings of work in his Chiefs debut. He did not issue a walk and struck out one. Zachary Rosscup (1-0) allowed one hit over 2 1/3 shutout innings in his Chiefs debut while striking out two. Luis Liria escaped trouble in the eighth inning and earned his third save of the season with two shutout innings and one hit allowed and one strikeout.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Anthony Giansanti (3B) - Giansanti entered the game in the second inning and delivered a game-winning hit in the eighth. Since returning to the lineup on Sunday after missing 12 days, Giansanti has three hits and three RBI.
