South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
The South Bend Silver Hawks (37-37, 2-2) dropped an 8-2 decision with the Great Lakes Loons Monday in front of 2,232 fans at Coveleski Stadium. The Silver Hawks are now 5-7 in 12 meetings with the Loons this season.
Gustavo Gomez (5-6) beat the Silver Hawks for the second time this season, allowing just one earned run on five hits over six innings. The right-hander walked three and fanned six. Jesse Darrah (5-4) took the defeat for South Bend, tossing six innings of four-run, seven-hit baseball. Darrah was charged with just three earned runs.
The Silver Hawks had trouble containing the Loons leadoff hitter, James Baldwin, who went 3-for-5 with two triples and three RBIs. Baldwin's two-RBI triple in the seventh inning triggered a four-run inning that seemingly put the game away for the Loons. The Loons lead swelled to 8-1.
The Loons took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. After another Baldwin triple, Kevin Taylor delivered an RBI base hit up the middle. South Bend answered a half inning later on an RBI single from Matt Helm, who extended his hitting streak to five games.
The Silver Hawks were held without another run until the ninth inning when Kerry Jenkins hit an RBI single to right field. For Jenkins it was his first career Silver Hawks hit.
With the game tied 1-1, Great Lakes took the lead with a three-run, four-hit fifth inning that included run-producing hits from Pedro Guerrero and Baldwin.
The Silver Hawks loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning but did not score.
In his Silver Hawks debut, Alex Capaul allowed four earned runs on four hits during the seventh inning. Willy Paredes did not allow a run over two scoreless innings.
Juan Noriega worked the final three innings for the Loons and notched his first save.
The Silver Hawks and Loons hook up again Tuesday at Coveleski Stadium. Archie Bradley (7-4, 3.91) will be opposed by right-hander Raydel Sanchez (1-2, 3.38). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. EST. Tickets are available for purchase by calling 235-9988 or online at www.silverhawks.com .
