Bakersfield Jam News Release
(Bakersfield, Calif.) - The Bakersfield Jam grabbed their season-high sixth straight win with a 120-108 triumph over the Austin Toros on Friday night, thanks in large part to an 18-6 run opening the second half.
After allowing the Toros to shoot over 52% from the field in a first quarter that saw them down two by its end, Bakersfield turned up the defensive intensity and held Austin to only 13-for-36 shooting over the second and third periods. Closing the third with a 94-73 advantage, the Jam relaxed slightly down the stretch but never let the Toros back within single digits.
Bakersfield showed its depth with a well-distributed scoring attack, as six players finished in double-digits and three eclipsed the 20 point mark. Will Daniels led the way with 23 points on a remarkable 8-for-10 shooting night, and added five assists, four rebounds, four blocks and two steals to the cause. Alade Aminu notched another double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Brian Butch continued his impressive work on the glass in a 10-point, 17-rebound performance.
It was Reece Gaines who led the Jam's second-quarter surge though, with 16 of his 22 points coming in that frame. He finished the day a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line and 3-for-3 from long distance, and also collected five assists and five rebounds in 31 minutes off of the Bakersfield bench.
Curtis Jerrells was the story for Austin, scoring 15 of his game-high 30 points in the first quarter as the Toros led by as many as eight, but he slowed down considerably in the second half. Dwayne Jones played a typically impressive game in the paint to finish with 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Lewis Clinch came on strong in the second half to score 16 points of his own.
Trey Johnson and Jeremy Wise rounded out the double-digit scorers for Bakersfield with 16 and 12 respectively, and Wise dropped eight dimes to lead the team. Luke Bonner and Dominique Coleman scored 10 points apiece off the bench for Austin, while starters Michael Joiner and Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson each had 11.
The Toros and Jam meet again on Saturday night at the Jam Events Center as Bakersfield will try to even the season series at three wins each.
