Vipers drop one to Bighorns

RENO, Nevada - Desmon Farmer scored 12 of his game high 28 points in the final quarter to lead a fourth quarter explosion, as the Reno Bighorns knocked off the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 114-101 Friday night at the Reno Events Center. The Vipers two-game win streak came to a close as they fell to 30-13 on the season while Reno improved to 21-21.

The Vipers started strong in the opening moments, using the three- pointer as their calling card early. The Vipers hit their first two three point attempts and led 8-2 at the 9:42 mark of the first quarter. The Vipers would surrender the lead to the Bighorns at the 3:31 mark after Richie Frahm hit his first three-point jumper to give Reno a 22-21 lead. The lead change was the only one of the first half.

The Bighorns increased their lead to 11 points in the second quarter after going on an 8-0 run which was capped off by a Chris Davis lay-up at the 8:02 mark which gave Reno a 41-30 lead. The Vipers trimmed the Reno lead to six at the intermission.

The third quarter belonged to the Vipers as they rallied to regain the lead. Rockets assignee Jermaine Taylor knocked down his third three- pointer of the contest to the game at 61, the second tie of the game. On the ensuing possession Julian Sensley gave Rio Grande Valley the lead with 7:45 remaining in the third. Rio Grande Valley outscored the Bighorns 34-25 in the third to take an 82-79 lead into the final period.

The Vipers struggled to find defensive stops in the fourth quarter. Mike Harris completed a three-point play with 10:54 remaining in regulation giving the Vipers a seven-point advantage their largest lead of the contest at 88-81. Reno followed with an 11-0 run to take a 92-88 lead with 7:16 remaining. The Vipers trailed 94-93 with 5:16 remaining that was the closest they would get to the lead. Reno closed out the game on an 8-0 run and outscored Rio Grande Valley 35-19 in the final period to beat the Vipers for the first time this season.

Harris led the Viper offense with 24 points while hauling in 10 rebounds. Will Conroy finished two rebounds shy of a triple-double as he scored 16 and dishing out 12 assists. Julian Sensley was solid for the Vipers in the middle scoring 22 while adding eight rebounds. Taylor, in his first game back on his third reassignment had a strong game as he scored 19.

Rod Benson scored 20 points and hauled in eight rebounds to help lead the Bighorns charge. Yaroslov Korolev had 12 points and 12 boards while Richie Frahm scored 15 points with seven boards off the bench.

The Vipers face the Bighorns for the final time this season Saturday night at the Reno Events Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 9pm CST.
