Baez K's 10 as 'Wolves Take Down Reading

The SeaWolves made it two straight wins to start the season, taking down the Reading Fightin Phils 4-1 on Friday night at First Energy Stadium. It marks the first time since 2014 that Erie has started the season 2-0.
Both starting pitchers were superb as Erie's Sandy Baez and Reading's Harold Arauz kept the game scoreless early. Baez would hurl 4.2 shutout frames, allowing just three hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts in a no-decision. Arauz also took a no-decision firing five scoreless, allowing four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Erie broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth against Reading reliever Seranthony Dominguez. Troy Montgomery led off with a walk and stole second. Jake Rogers singled up the middle with one out, plating Montgomery and on an error, moved to third. It was Rogers third RBI in the first two games. Dominic Ficociello followed with an RBI single, scoring Rogers for a 2-0 lead. Ficoicello finished the night with a pair of hits and a walk.
The SeaWolves added to the lead in the seventh. Will Maddox singled with one out and moved into scoring position on a Sergio Alcantara base hit. It was the second of three hits on the night for Alcantara. With two outs, Jake Robson singled home Maddox for a 3-0 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, the SeaWolves scored their final run of the night to take a 4-0 lead when, with two outs, Gabriel Quintana blasted an opposite-field home run. The home run for Quintana was his second of the season.
The lone Reading run came in the last of the eighth against Erie reliever Fernando Perez. After retiring the first three batters he faced, Perez gave up a solo home run to Damek Tomscha to make it a 4-1 game. Perez would get out of the inning with no further damage, taking the game into the ninth with a three-run advantage.
Erie righty John Schreiber worked a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to seal the victory, earning his first save.
Kyle Dowdy (1-0) earned the win for the SeaWolves tossing two scoreless innings in relief of Baez. Dowdy allowed one hit with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.
Dominguez (0-1) took the loss for Reading allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts in two innings.
The SeaWolves will go for the series win on Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. at First Energy Stadium. RHP Spencer Turnbull (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against LHP JoJo Romero (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
