Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(Reading, PA) - Runs have been hard to come by for the first 18 innings of the 2018 season, but Damek Tomscha assured the fans in Baseballtown not to worry after his eighth inning home run gave the Fightins (0-2) their only run in Friday night's 4-1 loss. Erie (2-0) squared up 11 hits for the second straight night in a game where starters Harold Arauz and Sandy Baez traded zeroes for the first five innings.
Both righthanders had it working early, and Arauz worked through two patches in the second and fourth where he put the first two batters on. In the second, singles by Dominic Ficociello and Gabriel Quintana came before a strikeout. With runners at the corners, Arauz got a groundball to short and Malquin Canelo took care of it on his own for an inning-ending double play.
Jake Rogers and Ficociello walked to start the fourth, and again, Arauz delivered with a strikeout and another inning-ending double play around the horn to escape the jam. The problem was Baez, who struck out the side in the first, then two more in the second, fourth, and fifth before being lifted after four-and-two-thirds.
The scoring opened for the SeaWolves in the top of the sixth off Phillies 40-man member Seranthony Dominguez. His first Double-A at-bat ended in a walk to Troy Montgomery, who stole second and broke the tie on an RBI single from Rogers. Ficociello made it 2-0 with his second hit, and they'd get one more in the seventh on a base hit from Jake Robson. Quintana lifted an opposite field home run to right in the eighth that made it 4-0, and Tomscha would do the same in the home half for the final stroke with two games left in the series.
