Harrisburg Senators News Release
TONIGHT'S GAME The Senators and Baysox play game two of the season after the Senators won on opening night 10-9 in a 13 inning marathon. Zach Collier's three run home run in the top of the 13th inning was the difference in the one run win. Friday's game is the second of 22 games between the Senators and the Baysox this season, the most games the Senators play against any Eastern League team this season.
ABOUT LAST NIGHT Thursday's season opener between the Senators and Baysox was the first game this season to institute Minor League Baseball's new extra inning rule where each team starts with a runner at second base to begin every extra inning. In addition, the game was the longest Senators season opener in modern history (since 1987) in terms of both time (4:04) and innings (13). Finally, Rafael Bautista had seven at bats, which tied the modern franchise record and the four runs scored by Aderlin Rodriguez were tied for the most ever by a Senators opponent.
ZACH ATTACK Zach Collier knocked the eventual game-winning three run home run in the 13th, which also gave him 5 RBI in the game, tying a career high he set with Reading on August 2, 2014. It's also the first time Collier has had more than two RBI in a game with the Senators since June 4, 2016.
32 YEARS OF SENATORS BASEBALL Thursday marked the beginning of the 31st season in Senators franchise history. The club has won the Eastern League Championship six times, most recently in 1999. 289 former Senators players have reached the Major Leagues, including five from the 2017 season (Adrian Sanchez, Erick Fedde, Andrew Stevenson, Raudy Read and Victor Robles). 32 former Senators players, managers and coaches have gone on to manage or coach in the majors, including current manager Matt LeCroy who served as the Nationals bullpen catcher from 2014-2015.
BIG LEAGUE EXPERIENCE Pitchers Logan Darnell, and Roman Mendez and outfielder Rafael Bautista all have Major League experience. Darnell appeared in seven games and made four starts for Minnesota in 2013, going 0-2 with a 7.13 ERA across 24.0 innings. Mendez appeared in 45 games across 2014-15 for the Red Sox and Rangers, appearing in a career high 30 games in relief for Texas in 2014 with a 2.18 ERA. Bautista went 4-25 in 17 games for the Nationals in 2017.
SENATORS STARTING PITCHER Jefry Rodriguez makes his Senators and double-A debut Friday night. The right-hander finished 4-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 12 games and 10 starts with Potomac last season while missing 80 games after being suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Rodriguez is the 24th ranked prospect in the Nationals organization per Baseball America.
BOWIE STARTING PITCHER The Baysox counter with starter Jordan Kipper. The left-hander pitched with three different teams last season and finished 7-7 with a 3.74 ERA. Kipper began the season in the Angels organization with the Mobile Black Bears before being traded to the Orioles for right-hander Damien Magnifico. Kipper started his Orioles career with triple-A Norfork before ending the 2017 season with Bowie.
