Binghamton Senators News Release
LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators won both of their games last week and are now in second place in the East Division with 45 points.
FRIDAY, JAN. 7TH vs. WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON (5-1 W): The Senators first three goals came on the power play as the Senators rolled to a 5-1 victory. JASON SPEZZA and ANTON VOLCHENKOV each had three points nights and DENIS HAMEL and JOSH LANGFELD extended their goal scoring streaks to three games. RAY EMERY blocked 27 Penguins shots to pick up the win against former top NHL draft pick MARC-ANDRE FLEURY. Binghamton rookie DANNY BOIS finished the scoring with his first professional goal at 14:39 of the third period. The Senators were 3 for 8 on the power play and did not allow a power-play goal to the Penguins in eight chances.
SATURDAY, JAN. 8TH vs. SYRACUSE (4-2 W): Binghamton won its fifth game in five tries against the Syracuse Crunch behind solid goaltending from BILLY THOMPSON and another three-point game from JASON SPEZZA. The B-Sens took an early lead on a CHRIS KELLY power-play goal. But the Crunch would tie the game on a goal from former Binghamton Ranger PETER FERRARO at 15:09 of the period. It only took 39 seconds for the Senators to respond when JASON SPEZZA scored on a breakaway. BRANDON BOCHENSKI added a power-play goal and JASON SPEZZA would score an empty-net goal to create the final score of 4-2. BILLY THOMPSON tied a franchise record with his fifth straight win. He stopped 29 of 31 shots and was named first star of the game. Shots were even with each team taking 31. Binghamton's power play was again effective with the Sens scoring on 2 of 6 chances. The Senators did not allow a power-play goal stopping Syracuse in each of their five opportunities.
THIS WEEK: Binghamton travels to Philadelphia for a game with the East Division leading Phantoms on Wednesday. Following the game, the Senators will return home to play Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena for the second consecutive Friday. Rochester will be in town the following night as the Senators conclude the week.
WEDNESDAY JAN. 12TH @ PHILADELPHIA (7:05 p.m.): The Senators can cut into the Phantoms East Division lead in this mid-week showdown. Philadelphia begins the week eight points ahead of the Senators. The Phantoms lead the season series with a 2-0-0-1 record. In the last outing CHRIS KELLY and PATRICK SHARP each scored twice in regulation to send the game to overtime and ultimately a shootout. In the shootout the Senators would get goals from DENIS HAMEL and BRANDON BOCHENSKI to outscore the Phantoms 2-1. CHRIS KELLY (2g, 0a), JOSH LANGFELD (0g, 2a) and BRIAN POTHIER (0g, 2a) lead the Senators in scoring in the series. Forward PATRICK SHARP has four points (4g, 0a) in three games to lead the Phantoms.
FRIDAY JAN. 14TH vs. WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON (7:05 p.m.) Blues Brothers sponsored by Roberts Eyecare. The Blues Brothers will perform on-ice during the first and second intermission: The Senators start the week with a one point lead on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Last week the Sens defeated the Penguins 5-1 behind three-point nights by JASON SPEZZA and ANTON VOLCHENKOV. SPEZZA'S eight points (2g, 6a) are the most by any player in the four-game series this season. Five players have three points for the Penguins. Binghamton has defeated Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in three straight games since being shutout 2-0 by MARC-ANDRE FLEURY on Halloween.
SATURDAY JAN. 15TH vs. ROCHESTER (7:05 p.m.) Beach Blast sponsored by Roberts Eyecare. The first 1,000 fans to enter the building will receive sunglasses: The Americans and Senators have not faced each other since November. In that month, the two teams played three times with the Senators winning once. All three games went into overtime. DENIS HAMEL (2g, 4a) and JASON SPEZZA (2g, 4a) lead the Sens with six points in three games. Rookie left wing THOMAS VANEK has seven points (3g, 4a) in three games for the Amerks.
SENS SNIPPETS: Binghamton has won five consecutive contests at home â one win short of the record set last season. During the winning streak, the Senators have outscored the opposition 30 to 8...The Senators have not gone to overtime in eight games. They last played an overtime on Dec. 19 when they defeated the Philadelphia Phantoms 3-2 in a shootout...The Senators now have the league's top power play, scoring on 21% of their opportunities. Since the Christmas break the Senators have scored on 11 of 35 power play opportunities (31.4%)...JASON SPEZZA leads the league with 55 points (16g, 39a) while DENIS HAMEL continues to be tied for second in goals scored with 23. BRIAN POTHIER is tied for the scoring lead among defenseman with 28 points (9g, 19a)...The Senators have scored four goals in all five on their games against Syracuse this season â winning each one.
SENS IN THE COMMUNITY: Fans can skate with the Senators at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Sunday, Jan. 16th from 3 to 5 p.m. Those wishing to skate with the B-Sens must present a ticket that is available at participating Manley's Mighty Marts.
SENATORS HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR TSUNAMI DISASTER RELIEF: The Binghamton Senators helped raise $922 for the Tsunami relief efforts of the American Red Cross at home games on Jan. 7 and Jan. 8. A signed Binghamton Senators jersey raised $680 in a raffle while the Spin to Win game on the concourse brought in another $242.
