LAST TIME OUT: The Binghamton Mets cranked 13 hits and defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 3-2, Thursday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Rainy Lara allowed nine hits but held the Fisher Cats to two runs over 5.2 innings. Phillip Evans went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI, Amed Rosario was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI and Matt Oberste finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Josh Zeid will throw for the B-Mets, his second start against Portland this season. Zeid was strong in Portland on 7/21, tossing eight shutout innings and striking out seven with four hits against. Eight innings represented a career-high. He last pitched on Sunday in Harrisburg and earned the win thanks to six innings of two-run ball.
PORTLAND STARTER: RHP Mitch Atkins will throw for Portland, appearing for the fifth time against the B-Mets. Atkins has made three prior starts and one relief appearance, going 1-2 with a 4.08 ERA. He has bounced between the bullpen and the rotation, going 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA over ten appearances (21.2 IP) as a reliever and 3-7 with a 5.75 ERA in 16 starts (81.1 IP).
STAY HOT : Phillip Evans went 4-for-5 with a double on Thursday and finished the road trip batting .654 (17-26) with six extra base hits (5 2B, HR) over six games. Four hits matched a season-high by a B-Met and a career-high for Evans. He previously went for four hits on 8/12 in Harrisburg.
MAKING A RUN AT IT: Phillip Evans' 4-for-5 day on Thursday raised his batting average to .329. Evans is 73 plate appearances shy of qualifying for the league leaderboard and his mark would be second in the Eastern League to Portland's Anuery Tavarez (.340). Evans needs to average 4.05 plate appearances per game over Binghamton's final 18 in order to qualify.
STARTING FAST: The B-Mets plated one run in the first inning on Thursday, the third straight game and the sixth time in the past eight that they had scored in the opening frame. Binghamton has gone 4-2 in those six games.
THE ELIMINATION NUMBER: Binghamton's current elimination number sits at one. Any B-Met loss or Trenton Thunder victory would mathematically eliminate the B-Mets from playoff contention. Binghamton has not missed the postseason since 2012.
OFFENSIVE IN AUGUST: The B-Mets are hitting .286 as a team in August, headlined by Phillip Evans (.448), Dominic Smith (.383) Maikis De La Cruz (.323) and Matt Oberste (.321). Only New Hampshire (.305) and Portland (.288) have a higher team batting average this month.
HOME AGAIN: The B-Mets begin their penultimate homestand, a six-game stint, after completing an eight-game road trip at 4-4.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Game two of the three-game set with Portland is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Saturday. RHP Tyler Herron will start for Binghamton against RHP Mitch Atkins for Portland.
