Atkins, Sea Dogs Stifle B-Mets, 3-0

BINGHAMTON, NY- Mitch Atkins struck out nine over seven shutout innings as the Portland Sea Dogs shut out the Binghamton Mets, 3-0, Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Phillip Evans accounted for three of Binghamton's four hits in the loss.

Portland got the scoring started in the third. With one out, Mauricio Dubon blasted a solo homer deep to left, putting the Sea Dogs on the board. In the fourth, Cody Decker also took Josh Zeid deep, a solo shot to left-center to make it 2-0.

The Sea Dogs added to that advantage in the sixth as Zeid put a pair of batters on with back-to-back hit by pitches. He was then pulled in favor of Paul Paez who walked Decker then allowed Henry Ramos to single in Court, making it 3-0.

Meanwhile, Atkins baffled the B-Mets offense. Over seven innings he allowed only three hits and struck out a season-high nine batters. Atkins (4-7) held the B-Mets scoreless and picked up the win.

Zeid (4-4) was the losing pitcher after allowing three runs on two hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five, walked four, hit two batters and allowed two home runs in the losing effort.

Binghamton brought the game-tying run to the plate in the eight but stranded two runners. Luis Ysla worked a hitless ninth for the Sea Dogs, converting his second save.

Evans led the B-Mets offense by going 3-for-4 with three singles, his fourth consecutive game with three hits or more. Dominic Smith produced Binghamton's only other hit, going 1-for-4 with a single.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Saturday. RHP Tyler Herron will start for Binghamton against RHP Keith Couch for the Sea Dogs. *POSTGAME NOTES:* Binghamton was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention in the second inning when Trenton beat Hartford, 2-0...Xorge Carrillo was hit by two pitches in the game and is now the franchise record holder with 27 HBP's as a B-Met. He surpassed Allan Dykstra, who held the previous record with 25.
