B-Mets Choose Their Spots Wisely in 6-5 Win

RICHMOND, VA - Joe Benson supplied a pinch-hit go-ahead single in the sixth, one of Binghamton's five hits with runners in scoring position, to push the B-Mets past the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 6-5, on Saturday night at The Diamond. The B-Mets withstood a 14-hit attack from the Squirrels en route to their league-best 22nd one-run win. Jon Velasquez and Paul Sewald slammed the door by retiring the final eight batters of the game.

With the B-Mets down by a run in the sixth, Josh Rodriguez put himself in scoring position by swiping his team-best 10th bag of the season. Vince Belnome brought him home and tied the game by flaring a single to shallow right. Richmond starter Tyler Beede ceded to the bullpen after allowing two more to reach.

Benson, pinch-hitting for Gabriel Ynoa, zipped a 2-1 pitch from Pedro Rodriguez into left to plate Belnome with the go-ahead run. Gavin Cecchini capped the inning with a run-producing infield single.

The lead, Binghamton's second of the night, nearly slipped away in the seventh as Josh Smoker allowed the first two he faced to reach. Mitch Delfino cut the deficit in half with sacrifice fly while getting robbed of a hit on a diving catch by Gilbert Gomez in center.

Velasquez grabbed the ball from Smoker with two men on base and one out. With the potential tying run on third, the righty struck out Jackson Williams and fanned pinch hitter Devin Harris to preserve Binghamton's one-run lead.

Velasquez returned to post a perfect eighth before handing off to Sewald for the ninth. The B-Met righty struck out two in a blank inning to earn his team-leading 17th save of the season.

Binghamton and Richmond opened the contest by exchanging crooked numbers over the first three innings. Cole Hunter put the Squirrels on the board with a two-run homer in the first. Binghamton countered with a three-spot in the third. Richmond grabbed the lead back on a two-run single by Delfino in the third.

Ynoa (8-7) surrendered 10 hits, allowing double-figures for the third time this season, over five innings to collect the win. Beede (2-5) struck out seven, but walked four across 5-1/3 innings in the defeat.
