BOWIE, MD -- Jake Cave went 3-for-4 with a double and scored two runs scored to lead the Thunder to their first victory in more than two years in Bowie with a 6-4 win on Saturday night.
The win, which was the first since May 27, 2013 at Prince George's Stadium, broke a 15-game losing streak at Bowie. With a victory by the Binghamton Mets and a loss by the Reading Fightin Phils on Saturday night, the Thunder lead the Eastern League Wild Card by one game and trail the B-Mets by 1.5 games for first place in the division.
The Thunder offense wasted no time on Saturday night, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. Mark Payton drove in a run with a single and Francisco Arcia drove in two more with a base hit to right off Bowie starter Elih Villanueva.
The Thunder extended their lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning with an RBI single from Ali Castillo on a play in which a second run scored on a throwing error by Baysox 1B Brandon Snyder. After Bowie added a run in the bottom of the inning, Eddy Rodriguez pounded his third home run of the season - a solo shot over the wall in left - to take a 6-3 lead.
Starter Jaron Long picked up the victory with 5.1 innings of four-run ball. Alex Smith, Andury Acevedo and Mark Montgomery combined to strike out six in 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to finish the win.
With two more hits from Ali Castillo on Saturday night, the Thunder infielder is batting 8-for-18 (.444) over his last five games.
Your Thunder will look to split the series with the Baysox on Sunday afternoon at 2:05pm. RHP Danny Burawa (0-0, 2.57) will start for the Thunder, RHP Joe Gunkel (6-3, 3.10) will go for Bowie. Listen live to Thunder baseball on 91.3 WTSR and online at Trentonthunder.com beginning at 1:50pm on Sunday afternoon.
