BITTERSWEET NIGHT AS THE WHOOPIE PIES - Playing as the Maine Whoopie Pies, the Sea Dogs fell to the Reading Fightin Phils last night 8-3. Bryson Stott clubbed his 10th homer of the year for the FIghtin Phils in the top of the first inning and Reading led, 1-0. The Whoopie Pies tied the game in the bottom of the first inning after Danny Santana led-off with a single to left field. He scored on an RBI double off the Maine Monster by Ronaldo Hernandez and the game was tied, 1-1. In the top of the third inning, Sal Gozzo reached on a single to centerfield then moved to third on a single by Matt Kroon. Denyi Reyes then threw a wild pitch, scoring Gozzo and the Fightin Phils took the 2-1 lead. After Stott drew a walk, Madison Stokes drove two runs home with a double to left field, extending their lead, 3-1. Danny Santana blasted a lead-off home run in the bottom of the third inning and the Whoopie Pies continued to trial, 3-2. The Fightin Phils struck again in the top of the fifth inning. After a lead-off homer by Kroon, Stott doubled for his second hit of the night. Stokes drove him home with a sacrifice fly and Reading continued to lead, 5-2. Reading plated three more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Brock Stassi singled to left field then moved to second when Sal Gozzo drew a walk. Matt Kroon then popped up a sacrifice fly to right field and Stott singled home Gozzo. Portland trailed, 8-2. After Hudson Potts led-off the bottom of the ninth inning with a double, he scored on an RBI single by Roldani Baldwin and the Whoopie Pies fell 8-3.

WHO IS LEFT - The Sea Dogs only have three more series left in the regular season this year. After an off-day on Monday, they will travel to New Hampshire to face the Fisher Cats then will return to Hadlock Field September 7th for the final six home games of the regular season. The Sea Dogs will wrap up the season on the road for six-games with the Hartford Yard Goats at Dunkin' Donuts Park.

MAJOR LEAGUE REHABBERS - Danny Santana and Ryan Brasier will be rehabbing with the Sea Dogs this week. Santana was signed as a minor league free agent by the Boston Red Sox on 3/7/2021, entering his 14th professional season. Prior to the Red Sox, he was a member of the Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers. In 2021, Santana is batting .171 with two doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI for the Red Sox in 33 games. Brasier has been in the Red Sox organization since 2018, also in his 14th professional season. He had Tommy John surgery on 6/10/14 and went nearly five years between Major League pitching appearances, from 9/27/2013 with the Los Angeles Angels to 7/9/2018 with Boston.

ACTIVE STREAKS - LHP Rio Gomez has not allowed a run in his last 12 appearances spanning 18.0 innings with only nine hits and 17 strikeouts. RHP Joan Martinez has not allowed a run in his last seven games (9.1 innings) while allow just three four and striking out 13.

WHERE DO WE STAND - The Portland Sea Dogs are currently in fourth place in the Double-A Northeast League, 5.0 behind the first-place Akron Rubberducks and 2.5 games out of a playoff spot. The Bowie Baysox are in second place while the Somerset Patriots are in third place, 2.0 games ahead of Portland. The Sea Dogs will not face any of those three teams for the rest of the regular season.

ON THE MOUND - RHP Josh Winckowski last appeared 8/22 vs Binghamton...he had pitched 3.2 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out two, but the game was suspended with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. He has faced the Fightin Phils once on 7/18 at Reading he tossed 5.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three. Winckowski allowed one home run to Reading.
