Detroit City FC News Release
HAMTRAMCK, MICHIGAN - The Detroit City Football Club extended its unbeaten streak to nine - highlighted by six-straight victories - with a 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls II on Saturday afternoon at Keyworth Stadium. Forward Francis Atuahene tallied the match winner in the 82nd minute - his first since joining the Club this season.
Atuahene was subbed on in the 56th minute after an injury to forward Pato Botello Faz. After a few promising build ups that yielded no results for City (5-2-1), midfielder Michael Bryant won possession in the midfield and played a ball forward to right back Rhys Williams. Williams ran with the ball to the edge of the penalty area before finding Atuahene in front of the keeper to poke it in. Williams has a team-high three assists in league play this season.
The goal was Detroit City's 10th match-winner after the 75th minute under head coach Trevor James since his arrival in 2019 - third already this season.
Le Rouge added a second just minutes later, as Atuahene beat his defender into the attacking third and centered a pass looking for forward Billy Forbes. The Red Bulls II's (1-1-6) clearance attempt found the back of its own net - the first own goal tally for Le Rouge this year.
In the first 20 minutes of play, DCFC was unable to create much of anything due to the high pressure by New York.
Forward Antoine Hoppenot was able to create a scoring chance in the 21st for Detroit City, battling through a pair of defenders to play a ball into the 18-yard box for Botello Faz , but Red Bulls II keeper Anthony Marucci was able to spoil the early opportunity.
The best chance for Detroit in the first 45 minutes came with stoppage time winding down. Hoppenot whipped a ball into the box and found the feet of Botello Faz who knocked it in. The tally was waived off though with the offside flag up.
New York's best chance of the match came in the 52nd minute as Juan Castillo released a left-footed volley toward the frame that rang off the crossbar.
Detroit controlled 51.3% of play in the game and ended with six shots total - two on target. The Red Bulls II led the way on fouls with 14 to City's nine and had the lone yellow card.
Next Saturday, Le Rouge will be away at FC Tulsa. Kickoff from Oneok Field Stadium is set for 8:30 pm ET on ESPN+.
