Cubo Scores Two as OCSC Beats RGVFC on the Road
April 30, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Orange County SC News Release
A first half brace from Cubo Torres gave Orange County SC a 2-1 victory over the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros on Saturday, April 30 at H-E-B Park in Edinburg, Texas. Cubo now leads OCSC with three goals scored in league competition.
The starting 11 of head coach Richard Chaplow saw the return of defender Michael Orozco and defender Brent Richards. In addition, defender Rob Kiernan also made his return to the squad after being out for the beginning part of the 2022 campaign.
Just three minutes into the match, Cubo headed in the first goal off a cross from midfielder Daniel Pedersen. It was the first goal in open play during USL Championship competition for the former Mexican international.
The lead lasted two minutes. RGVFC capitalized on an OCSC defensive mistake to equalize the match with a Ricky Ruiz strike. Ruiz, the Lake Elsinore, CA native and former UC Riverside Highlander, scored his first goal for RGVFC since joining them ahead of the season.
After an explosive start, the match began to take its form with RGVFC enjoying most of the possession and attacking chances which OCSC defended. When OCSC did possess the ball, the defending champions continued to push forward and break down their opponent's backline.
In the 38', midfielder Tony Rocha won a free kick on the left side which allowed OCSC to prepare for a set-piece. Rocha took the ensuing free kick and crossed in a dangerous ball into the box where Cubo was ready to head in his second goal of the match. The teams headed to the break with OCSC up on top, 2-1.
The scoreline remained the same in the second half, but RGVFC had its chances to equalize as they continued to control the possession battle. Despite the home team's advances, the OCSC backline held firm and preserved the lead all the way through stoppage time.
This marked the first time OCSC has taken all three points on the road in the 2022 USL Championship season. It was also Cubo's first multi-goal match with OCSC and did it against his former coach Wilmer Cabrera.
OCSC returns to Irvine for a three-match homestand from May 7 to May 21. On Saturday, May 7, the first Fiesta de Futbol kickoff against Oakland Roots SC at 7:00 PM PDT. Next, FC Tulsa visits Championship Soccer Stadium on Friday, May 13. The homestand concludes with the second Beer Fest of the season on Saturday, May 21 against El Paso Locomotive FC.
