Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- The Asheville Tourists nearly pulled off a four game sweep over the Rome Braves, but they came up just short in Sunday afternoon's series finale. Despite outplaying the Braves for most of the afternoon, Asheville ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 final score.

Carlos Polanco started for the Tourists and pitched five innings. The young right-hander surrendered three runs on four hits. Rome struck first with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second. After Polanco walked Omar Obregon, Joseph Daris singled to center. Obregon went from first to third while Daris took second base as the relay throw ended up at third. The next batter, Ozzy Albies, singled both base-runners in on a line-drive to left-center.

The Tourists answered with one in the top of the third. With runners at the corners, Braves pitcher Alec Grosser fired an errant pick-off attempt toward first. Kevin Padlo jogged in to score while Wes Rogers took second. Grosser limited the damage to just the one run. In the fifth Rome added one more on an RBI groundout from Jordan Edgerton.

Asheville started stringing hits together late in the game, but ran into a couple outs on the base paths. In the seventh, the Tourists singled on three straight at bats but came up empty-handed.

Rogers brought the Tourists within a run by blasting a lead-off Home Run in the eighth. Later in the inning, with runners at the corners and two outs, Asheville put a double steal play on but the Braves defended it well. Dom Nunez led from third and Forrest Wall took off for second. The Braves catcher Tanner Murphy bluffed a throw to second and caught Nunez a step too far off third. That was the last threat Asheville put together.

The Tourists outhit the Braves 10-4 and had at least one runner on base in every inning except the sixth. Blake Shouse pitched three innings of perfect ball behind Polanco to help keep Asheville close. Tourists outfielder Omar Carrizales left the game in the middle of the second inning for unknown reasons.

The road trip continues for Asheville with a Monday evening contest in Hickory, NC. The Tourists and the Crawdads will begin game one action of a scheduled three game series at 6:00pm.
