Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads rallied from behind for the second straight night on Sunday, with Luke Tendler lining a go-ahead, 2-run homer in the 8th to lift the 'Dads to a 6-4 win over the Hagerstown Suns at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Hickory entered the 8th with a 4-3 advantage, but the Suns were able to tie the game at 4-4 on a hit-and-run, RBI single from Brennan Middleton off of Crawdads reliever Chris Dula. The 'Dads responded in the bottom of the frame however, with Travis Demeritte singling to right with one out before Tendler homered to right to put Hickory ahead 6-4.
Tendler finished the night 2-3 with his long ball, two RBI, and two runs scored. The North Carolina native remains the only Crawdad to homer on the season.
For the fourth straight game it was the Suns who jumped out to an early lead on the 'Dads, as Hagerstown scored once in the 1st inning and twice in the 2nd to go ahead 3-0. All three Suns runs came with two outs against Crawdads starter Brett Martin, who ended the night with three runs allowed on three hits, one walk, and five strikeouts.
Hickory got on the board and erased their deficit with a three-run rally in the 3rd on the strength of three walks and only one hit. Both Tendler and Jose Cardona were given free passes to start the frame, while Jose Trevino singled to left to load the bases with nobody out. Eduard Pinto followed and drove in the first run with an RBI walk, while both Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Morgan plated runs with sacrifice flies to tie the game at 3-3.
The score remained the same until the 5th thanks to Hickory reliever Jefri Hernandez, who tossed three perfect innings with four strikeouts. The Crawdads took their first lead of the night with a run in the 5th without a hit, as Morgan was hit by a pitch, was sacrificed to second by Michael De Leon, took third base on a fly out from Ronald Guzman, and finally scored on a wild pitch from Hagerstown starter Drew Van Orden for a 4-3 'Dads lead prior to the 8th inning action.
Dula (1-0) earned the win for Hickory after allowing an unearned run on three hits over two innings of relief. Andrew Cooper (0-1) took the loss for Hagerstown for giving up two runs, both on Tendler's homer, on three hits during his three frames on the mound. 'Dads closer John Fasola (2) earned the save with a scoreless ninth to end the game.
The win gives the Crawdads (3-1) the series win against the Suns (1-3). The 'Dads will now host the Asheville Tourists for a three-game series, beginning Monday night at 6:00 pm.
